No start..but wait...now it starts?
Okay, I've experienced this twice in the past 4 months on my 91
Anyway, I let my truck sit for maybe 8 hours or so...go out to my truck, turn the key and nothing. All the normal lights light up, I can turn my lights on, but it does nothing. After awhile of doing that I gave up and poked around under my hood and pondered a little. Then, tried it again and still didn't work. I did it a couple more times (turned the key from "on" to "start") and it cranked for about 6 seconds or so and I put my foot on the gas and it started. It ran fine after that. I've left my truck for 4 days at one point and it didn't do that.
Any thoughts?
Thanks a bunch!

I had the same problem on my '87 4Runner. Turned out a ground strap was loose going to the firewall and the main ground strap to the engine was loose. Once both were tightened, it has started ever since.

I've seen a neutral safety switch (automatic) and an ignition switch cause these problems. On my Mother in Law's '89 I had a real hard time figuring out her intermittent no-crank problem because it never seemed to happen when I was around. Her ignition switch had excessive resistance in the switch when it was hot but it still showed continuity and voltage at the starter when the key was turned to start. But not enough current was flowing to activate the solenoid. Like Abecedarian suggested, I jumped the starter and it turned right over. To see if it was her ignition switch or the neutral safety switch, I ran a temporary wire from the IGN1 (pin 2) to the STA (pin 1) of the ignition switch connector through a momentary-on, push-button switch. With this setup she would use the switch if the key didn't work. Every time the key didn't work, the temporary switch would work so I knew it was the switch that was bad. A new ignition switch solved her problems.
