No smoke, changed oil now smokes blue.
 

I have an 87 22R with 162k miles, when I got the truck the oil was black and at the low mark but did not feel thin.
The engine did not smoke while driving it for 100+/- miles.

I changed the oil and accidentally overfilled it by about half a quart (damned 4.5Q and 4.9Q engine fill mistake from an old service manual), when started it smoked blue some.

I removed the excess oil but the truck still smokes blue, but it seems to be less.

I replaced the PCV and cleaned the hoses.

It puffs a little blue smoke at start up but not for more than a second, after it is warmed up it will smoke blue pretty good if I rev it up about half way and let off the throttle just a little and hold it there.
No smoke at all when idling.
No cat converter.
I have a random miss on one cylinder about every 3-4 seconds, only misses one beat each time.
Newly rebuilt carb, engine starts great, no "low compression crank-for-5 minutes" starting.
It has plenty of power but does have a ticking sound in the engine, sounds like the usual 22R/RE tick to me.
It does ping a little once in a while but not much.

My question is how long would it take to burn off the excess oil that splashed around in the engine while it was overfilled (only overfilled 1/2 quart for about 30mins of idling, no driving)?

Why did it not smoke when I bought it less than 200 miles ago, even with a stubborn PCV?

Does my description of the blue smoke sound like valve seals/guides or piston rings? :cry2:

I am starting to fell that I got burnt pretty bad on this truck and am pretty pissed. :mad2:

what oil did you have in it last oil change?
what oil did you put in it this oil change?
did you put synthetic oil in it?

if it wasn't smoking before the oi change?

if you fill the oil to quickly you can fill the intake with a little oil, which can cause it to smoke for a little while, a good hard drive will clear this.

if you rev the motor and hold it for 10 seconds at 3000rpm and it smokes, most likely the oil ring is gumed up,
driving up a hill and blue/white smoke, oil ring
if you are driving and going down a hill and you remove your foot from the throttle about 10 seconds latter you put your foot back on the accerator and a cloud of blue some comes out it will be valve stem seals,

I had a similar thing happen on my toyota. I changed the black as night oil when I got it with 10w30. Now it smokes a little on startup before the cat warms up. I just hope it passes smog.

I dont know what oil was in it before I bought it.
I only drove it about 150 miles before changing the oil.

I put in a cheap brand (Walmart) of 10w40 dino oil.
I am thinking about putting in a straight weight oil but it is going to be cool weather soon, however it does not get colder than about 15F in the dead of winter around here.

I have not driven it since this happened, just diagnosing it while idling in the driveway, so I don't know if it does it under load.

Is it possible that carbon was sealing the leak and my oil change washed the carbon out and caused this to happen?

Any ideas on how to slow down blue smoke temporarily?
Anybody have any temporary luck out of Engine Restore additive?
Has anybody had any luck replacing rings without doing a complete rebuild?

Where do you live?
When I lived in california I used castrol 20W50 in my 87 4Runner with over 200K miles and it liked it. I only added 1 QT. per 1K miles while using the 20W50. just a thought

If you live in a colder climate I wouldn't recommend the 20W50 though..

I overfilled my 22re that I just bought because I forgot it took 4.5 qts and I poured 5 in there and it hasnt hurt it all....

i would try a better oil, such as shell mobil valvoline caltex, quality brands,
and see how it goes, other wise a hone, re-ring valve + stem seals, or live with it.

I finally got the lights and bumper street legal, been too busy lately and had too wet of weather to mess with the truck much.
I lugged the truck uphill and got no visible smoke, also I can not see any smoke when taking off from a light.
It seems like the smoking goes way down as the engine warms up.

I am assuming this is very bad valve seal(s), there is also a loud tick from the valve train, probably a bad valve guide.

Would bad rings smoke less as the engine got warmer, also don't bad rings smoke worse under load like lugging on a hill?

I also drove the truck with the hubs locked so as to lubricate the front diff. , truck was still shifted to 2H since it was dry pavement. I got a popping sound when turning into my driveway, sounds like I gotta pull and replace a $75 CV axle now damnit!
