no midrange power, on 22re need help please

okay, i've got a '92 22RE the problems i'm having seem to point twards the TPS, TPS has been replaced and re adjusted.

when the truck warms up, i lose all power unless i ease into the accellerator.
it backfires through the intake sometimes when it doesn't make power, to me it sounds like the timing is way way retarted but it idles perfect.
to me it sounds like there is some sensor that is messing up and telling the computer to retarted the timing. But i'm just really not sure on it right now.
the truck will run at WOT but not well. Definatally not trustworth for highway use.

Pulling codes 27 and 52, 52 is knocksensor and 27 is O2 sensor.

any help is appericated. thanks.

Sounds like you're running way too rich and flooding. Does it run okay before it warms up?

I just replaced the fuel filter thinking it could be a fuel issue. After installing it, the truck seemed to take forever to start like the fuel pump was struggling to fill the new filter up and prime the system. My friend crawled under the truck and put his ear to the tank and said the fuel pump wasn't priming when i turned the key on. And he even put his hand on the top of the pump and said the pump wasn't doing anything when the key was turned on.

The fuel pump is suppose to prime before starting right?

The fuel pump looks to be original, the truck has 194k on it. Think that may be the cause? Any ideas?

Yeah, it's supposed to come on. Could be the fuel pump or could be the fuel pump relay switch.

where is the fuel pump relay switch? I read in another post that the VAM has a switch in it that tells the fuel pump to turn on? could that be it?

I think its the pump, the truck takes forever to start up, when it does it will drive great down the road for a few blocks then start running like . Thats why we replaced the fuel filter.

It will run, but you'd be better with it. You'll see.

You can try that, but the TPS wouldn't keep the fuel pump from coming on. The VAF meter would, but so would the FP relay...or a bad fuel pump. Wouldn't hurt to check them all out. It's easy enough and then you'd know.

The FP relay should be behind the ECU....up under the dash a bit. I'm not sure how it's put together in the trucks, but in a 4rnr you have to take the glove box and surrounding dash out to get to it.

The FSM will tell you how to bypass the VAF and FP relay. Look under fuel pump and then jump the recommended terminals at the diagnostic box....FP-B+, I believe. When you do that if it still doesn't run, then fuel pump is bad. If it does run, it's either your FP relay or VAF. You can unplug the VAF, like the TPS, and see how it's affected then. If it doesn't change things, it's not likely the VAF. In which case, unplug the FP relay (it's also called the opening circuit relay) and jump the two terminals again. See what happens.

Check 'em all, but try the fuel pump first and post back.

(EDIT: In rethinking, you'd have to be running rather lean to get the codes you're getting.)

the truck won't run at all with the VAF unplugged, Crawled under the truck last night and was feeling around the fuel pump and one of the wires broke right off of the thing, i think i'm going to put a new fuel pump in it just for good measure.
the lines are all rusty and the thing just looks bad.

so new pump today, i think the body lift is really going to help when doing a fuel pump.

Just buy new hoses and steel lines and be done with it for another 20 years. If the lines were as bad as you imply, they were probably on the verge of braking anyway. It's better for them to break in your driveway than in the middle of nowhere. Think of it as a blessing in disguise!
