Newbie here with a question on a 93 4-Runner

Did a Search and came up with nothing concrete

Check Engine light came on and it's throwing a Code number 71.

Something about a EGR modulator or something like that.

I'm figuring it's the EGR Valve, but is there some sort of Modulator also?

This isn't my truck. It's my Dads and I didn't get to take a picture of the two things that a mechanic told him were bad. One being the EGR Valve and the other looks round with vacuum lines hooking up to it. Some kind of Modulator?

Any ideas? Thanks!

It's probably a VSV - vacuum switching valve. I had one go bad on my ADD, front axle wouldn't pull out of 4WD. I grabbed a handful from the wrecking yard for $20. They're about $70 from the stealership last time I asked.

You're asking about the "vacuum modulator" for the EGR valve. Look at this diagram from the service manual:
http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...77exhaustg.pdf
This is a complete guideline for inspecting the whole system. Did the mechanic inspect everything or just look at it and go "Uh, yeah...that's bad and that's bad"...really not having a clue and just guessing? Some do that and just throw parts figuring that's the problem. Most of this inspection is simple enough to do yourself....or your dad....and save a few bucks at the mechanic and bypass guessing games.

Also, the code "71" can be related to the EGR temp sensor:

Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted on what I find.

I don't know much about these trucks but am not afraid to dive in there.

I mean how much different can it be than my 87 FJ60?

Btw, would a bad EGR rob performance from one of these engines?

It's a 93 6 cylinder. Those that have driven it say it lacks power, badly.

Thanks!
