new timing chain cover, coolant leak
so. It's an 86 4wd with 22re
I just rebuilt the front end with engnbldr's front end kit (TC cover and chain, metal guides, water pump and oil pump, various gaskets). I ran it a little to set the timing and that is all (did not drive it anywhere). It was acting a little weird so, I pulled the valve cover to check it out. Coolant is most certainly leaking into the motor somewhere; the oil is really thin.
I suspect that the coolant is leaking into the timing chain chamber (presumably from one of the coolant passages). Before installing the new cover, I cleaned the living hell out of the block and timing chain cover surfaces and used brand new timing chain cover gaskets from the dealership.
I don't understand where this leak is coming from? anyone have similar experience with this issue? I'm pressure testing the coolant system here in a minute to see if there is in fact a leak. OR, perhaps, the coolant in the oil is residual from pulling the TC cover off. (last time I pulled the oil pan out, there was 6-10 oz. of oil remaining in the bottom of the oil pan (by the strainer), even with the plug pulled.) So, It's possible that the coolant dumped down when I removed the TC cover and was pumped through the system when I refilled with new oil.
holy hell...

thanks Highlux
pressure test on the coolant system: only lost 2 lbs of pressure over 10 minutes. Think it was the residual coolant in the pan. gonna drain and refill the oil and see how she runs...
