New rig got some questions.
First of all hello everyone! New here finally signed up. So I have always been around off-road "everything" lol but after a very long time I got my first yota and its just the one I wanted! I have always loved the first gen runners. Anyway I am going to use this thread to keep everyone updated as I complete the never ending mods and repairs we all do. First up some info and pics. 1988 SR5 3.0L manual. Geared 5.29, locked rear, 2.5in suspension and 2in body. 33" 12.5 x 15

Yeah, I'd have to say 11 mpg is not right. I had 33's with 5.29 gears on my '83 5 spd and a 22R with a modified Weber and got 15, after correction and all. My Runner, when it was still a 3.0 and 31's with 4.10's turned in a 20 mpg tank a couple times, even with hills, but all highway. I guess there's where 11 mpg may be normal is around town, but if you're talking highway or even mixed 50/50 it should be a little bit better.
A simple tune up can go a long way, but then again in hindsight I should've swapped a 3.4 in mine when my first tune up after a week of ownership turned into the heads being rebuilt when one of the spark plugs broke off flush in the head(#5)

For the 3VZ-E, 11 mpg could be correct with those gears and tires. If you're doing mostly off-roading in it and not a whole lot of highway driving, you might have to live with it. Mine has stock gears and tires and I get 17-18 MPG with 60% highway 40% city. I started at just 14-15 mpg though.
Improvements on the 3VZ-E that will increase mileage (and power) would be to put a straight-through/high-flow muffler on (Magnaflow are good) and go up 1/4" in the piping. Along with putting in a K&N air filter in instead of a paper one. Some people don't like these due to not filtering as well but you can't complain with the performance! You can search the forums for more info, this was recommended to me and turned out great! Only paid $275 for the whole deal and that's what bumped up my MPG's the most.
Other things you can do is to inspect and tune-up the fuel and air system. Check for air leaks, change fuel filter, clean injectors, those sorts of things.

Thanks guys! So a little update this past weekend I replaced the fuel filter, seafoamed and ran some atf thru the tank. I got up to 13 mpg now. I try to stay off the highways as much as possible because those god awful Baja Claws are just not made for it and take a pounding every time. I already have the K & N in and the first thing I did when I got the runner was clean and oil it. I have been looking at the Magna Flow full system and will at some point be installing that. But in the near future the next thing is a ZUK mod to do away with that saggy ass.

having done the 3.4 and i counted all costs and receipts i came to:
750 for the motor and ecu and harness from junkyard
500+shipping to ORS for the harness conversion plug and play unit
---wab fab for the labor of the swap (ask him but i think it was around 1500 for all the parts he needed and labor together. i cant find this invoice right now)
485 for parts and finishing crap
2 years of Rob and my time and then paying to finish it.
but worth every penny.
SFA on the other hand, not really that big of a deal. i have wheeled with it and it is very nice, (wabfab did it) but if you drive it on the road dont do it. more money than worth unless only a trail queen.
take care of any rust before it gets out of control as that is the only real killer for these trucks. parts and panels are expensive if you can find them..

Thanks guys. I will someday do a SAS but not at all worried about it right now. My first priority's are getting the ZUK mod in and shocks. As far as rust goes its really very clean apart from the trim under the slide windows.
