New owner, steering clunk question

I just bought a 1994 SR5 X-Cab, 159k miles, 40k on a new motor, canopy, the whole enchilada. It's my first truck ever, mile first vehicle not from europe, my first 4wd, so I'm pretty excited and even more new to the whole off-road world. Here's my first question:

I have noticed that when I am stopped, wheel turned to full lock, and then I accelerate and straighten the wheel, i get a "pop!" from the front end. I'm assuming it's associated with the recall, but what do I know? It occurs when I have the wheel turned to full lock, both left and right. Any thoughts? Thanks!

its normal, get used to it. ther was a recall, but it expired. my old 4runner had it too.

get used to a pop? ha

I'd try to figure it out personally.

My truck makes noises when i turn but I know what causes them, nothing to the extent of a loud pop tho. thats something binding up then unbinding.. thats not good imo

my 95 does it i thought it was the stops but it does it at full lock and when it is only half way turned....I have replaced everything under the front suspension except the bushings.....

Jack the front end up. Check for play in the idler arm, pitman arm, tie rods, etc. IF you don't know what your looking for or at, take it to a front end alignment shop (you trust) and have them inspect it. It could be any of those mentioned going out.

When you're driving, does the front end feel "loose"? Is there any rattling noise when you hit bumps?

a little loose

Yes, the steering does feel a bit "floaty" or loose. I attributed it to power steering because I'm so used to my old BMW. I haven't noticed rattling but I'll drive with the windows down and see if I can hear anything funny.

The way I understand it, power steering being old wouldn't make anything feel loose...just harder to turn. If it's loose, the steering components are wearing out. I just replaced the idler arm and two tie rods on my '86 4rnr w/210k and it feels like a tight, brand new, little 4x4 again. The idler arm was so shot, you could practically rattle it around like a church bell.
