New member needs opinion on newly purchased truck.
Hey, new member here.
Long time viewer first time poster.
I adopted an old Yoda the other day for a beater work truck.
I need some opinions on it.
87 22R 5speed.
Needs a carb rebuild and has a loud tick which sounds like the usual 22R rocker tap that needs attention, smoke a little when started but it may be the carb.
160k miles.
Paid $1500, keep in mind Toyota 4x4s are in high demand in my area (East TN). It's hard to find one for sale at all, let alone for a small amount of money.
Running gears seem perfect, steering and brakes are great too.
However, during the pre-purchase inspection I missed a little something hiding under patches of rubber undercoating... yep, the big C, right at the passenger side rear cab mount and frame cross beam.
Do you guys think it is safe to drive or should I re-sell and try to re-coup at least part of my money?
How bad do you guys think I over-paid for this truck?
A nice 87 would go for about $4000 in my area and I have seen some that looks as bad as this one I just bought go for $2000, in fact I talked the guy down to $1500 for this one.

Clean up the holes weld a plate in and your golden. I think you did alright. I'd hang on to it and fix her up. As for the tick just a quick valve adjustment and all better.

forgot
I forgot to mention I have an old 85 2WD X-Cab SR5 EFI for a parts truck.
Gonna do the EFI swap in the future.
BTW, does anybody know if the old optional stock matte black tube step bumper from 85 is capable of towing 3500 lbs?
Funny, I gave up on the old 2WD because of deep surface rust on the tail of the frame, then adopted a 4WD with holes in the middle, I guess I can't win.

I don't think I'd trust it pulling that much...
I have a smitty built tube bumper w/ hitch and I would not trust it to haul that much. Well not very far anyway. I have pulled the 4runner and a 20' boat around the yard a bit but nothing more than that. Depends on the amount of cancer on the rear I suppose.
Even if you do get it moving I hope you have brakes on what ever it is you are pulling. May not stop once you get moving.

Thanks, but I meant with the bumper moved to the 87 4x4, which has no frame rust other than the small amount of cancer in the previous pics.
I need to be able to pull a car dolly occasionally with a small car such as a mid 90s Honda Civic on it.
The stock bumper I talk of has a mount under it for a receiver.
It was an option back in 85, but I can find no documentation as to the tow capabilities of these old bumpers.
