new header/exhaust = crappy MPG or other cause?

my MPG has taken a nose dive. My 22RE used to get 550kms (342miles) to a tank on a regular basis in the summer, mostly city. now, i'm getting 400kms (249miles) per tank, again mostly city. here's what has changed recently:

- LC Engingeering header w/magnaflow high flow cat and 2.25" exhaust
- moved to a town with higher elevation where it's gotten as cold as -15C (5F)
- commuting is generally shorter. generally don't drive more than 10km (6miles) between point A & point B

My truck has been running quite well, although the starter doesn't like the cold mornings (neither do I) but the fuel mileage sucks. I used to love the fact that my engine got better mileage than most others and now I'm stuck in the pit of mediocrity.

Well a few things are going to contribute to your less then great mpg.

1. Since its so cold, you are warming your engine up in the morning. That really sucks alot of fuel down, BUT im sure its better for the engine then just taking off.

2. Again since its cold the air is much more dense thus more fuel needs to be added and there goes your milage.

3. Driving short distances can really put a hamper on your milage, I notice when I drive to school and back 4 times a day (not far) my mpg is very low.

One question - did you remove the battery cables to reset the computer? I heard that this is a needed step when installing a full exhaust.

I think the main reason is just a shorter drive. Longer warm ups in the morning may affect it a little but not that much. it sucks that you need to drive far and waste more gas to get better mileage

Just curious , do you have a exhausty sound near your header? I've replaced 3 gaskets and yet seen that they were leaking, but man it sure sounds like an exhaust leak. Sorry didnt mean to hijack the thread

Yeah, I typically see a drop in MPG in the winter. Pretty big too. I'll get 21-23 mpg city, 25+ hwy in the summer, and like 18-19 city winter.

You can try using a less viscous oil if the computer reset thing doesn't do it.

its the cold

I live in apart of Canada where the winters get brutal, -15C is a walk in the park. My mileage usually dips badly with the season....about a 50-75km difference between summer and winter, They love the gas when its cold.

Its the short trips. On my old explorer most of my trips would be less than 5 miles (lived 2 miles from school, 3.5 miles from work) and i would get like 12mpg in the winter, versus about 15-16mpg for the same stuff in warmer weather, and 19-20mpg highway

Dude i go from 500-515 a tank in the summer to 400 to a tank in the winter.
bone stock... live with it, ure mileage will jump back up when it's steady above 15 degrees... 10km drive kills it as well, you really need to get 20km+runs to get good mileage, starting kills ure mileage... theres nothing wrong with your truck dude...

Stupid question, but does the new exhaust include the O2 sensor? If not, there's your problem. Like I said, stupid question...

i dunno. doesn't it get boring basically having summer-like weather 12 months of the year? we get 100F degree weather here in the summer and -5F in the winter which to me is a nice balance. summer is great and all but winter has its appeal too.
