Need to rebuild carburetor also need to replace exhaust and muffler. Which one first?
Hey all,
1987 22r 4x4
This feels like a stupid question. I've been doing tons of repairs on my truck and getting tired of it... Just rebuilt top end with all new gaskets, repacked wheel bearings, changed all fluids, changed slave and master cylinders. Now after driving for 4,000 miles (the truck sat for 25 years) it's become glaringly obvious that I need to rebuild the carb and replace the exhaust/muffler.
I'm driving the truck every day and the muffler is rattling something fierce. It's pretty much rotted off. Also, my carb is dripping (not spritzing). I'm noticing some small starting/stalling issues with it. It's the original aisin.
I don't really have the time and money to conquer both, so I want to take care of one this weekend. A mechanic buddy said I should do the carb first, but why is that? The frickin muffler/exhaust is about to fall off. Feel like I should replace. Is there a "technical" reason for needing to rebuild the carb before replacing the exhaust system? Pretty new to all of this and have just been following yotatech and youtube instructions... hah.
Also, what are the chances that I will get the exhaust off and see that I need a new catalytic converter? How often do those go bad? Ugh. Thx.

Yep carb first. Fire hazard, and a required partof the engine. Muffler is a convience item, if you're worried about it falling off on the road secure it with mechanics/baling wire.
For the converter it's time to replace it when it doesn't pass emissions anymore, or is obviously plugged up (eg engine doesn't start, or shows signs of excessive back pressure).

I would not worry about a leaking carb gas is really not all that flammable(NOT)
Most blocks unless they are Aluminum will survive a vehicle fire.
if you are really quick and are not one to panic you can limit a engine fire to things like the wiring harness and all the plastic and rubber parts but depending on how intense the fire gets all the aluminum could be so much scrap.

Not leaking outside... well not worse than any other aisin carb. Just dripping inside. It just started doing it. Anyway, crap. Now I gotta park the thing for a few weeks. Gotta say, this 22r has been about the biggest pain in the butt that I've ever owned. Since buying it 4 months ago, head gasket blew, slave cylinder went out, muffler and exhaust falling off and carb needs rebuild. On top of it, had to chemical flush the cooling twice, change all fluids everywhere, repack wheel bearings, put new wheels tires, belts, hoses etc.
Might be frustrated at the moment, but feel like I'm over it. Anyone selling a honda accord?
