need Help Just bought a 1995 tacoma 4x4

I have a question for a mechanic with experience. I have a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 2.4 Liter 4 cylinder standard 4 speed. When I engage the 4x4 only one axle (Drivers Side) Turns. Is this normal?
If not what should I look for? I have it up on jack stands with out the tires on it. I am still missing the driver side CV Axle but i can see the thing that make the CV axle spin only on the driver side.

you may email me with answers at captgarza@aol.com

i think its normal! you have an open diff, so both sides wont always spin. the side missing the axel would have less drag on it because its not having to turn an axel/hub. so the side with less drag will spin first. make sense?

First, lets start off with what you really have.

No tacoma 4x4 ever had a 2.4, and they stopped making 4x4 4speeds in 1983. What do you you actually have?

And do you have ADD or manual hubs? If you have it up in the air, the side with the least resistance will spin meaning the side without the axle in it will spin because there is no resistance on that side from the axle or the spindle.
If you put the axle back in and stopped the axle from spinning, the other side (pass side) would then spin. Simple matter of how an open diff works.

the only way to get them to spin together at the same rate of speed is to install a limited slip or a locker.

Unless someone dropped another motor/tranny in it.????

Why would you downgrade to a 2.4, which requires rewiring the truck, AND a 4speed? I suppose its possible....just not feesible lol.

Well, I wouldn't...lol! But, who knows......someone may have had only that option. I guess we'll see when dude answers back.:)

no.... I was wrong Its a 2.7 five speed. I was looking at the dirt on the shifter.

Since you have an open diff, the side with the least resistance will spin. Try holding the spinning side, and see if the other side spins. It should once the ADD engages.
