I have searched the threads and I have found similar problems but not exactly what my truck is doing. It is an 89 pickup with a 22re auto trans. The engine has less than 20000 miles on it. I believe I have narrowed it down to the number 2 injector but I am not so sure that is the culprit. I examined all the spark plugs and the number 2 plug appeared to be lean. So I then crank the truck and put it in to drive while holding the brake which cause it to run rough and then pulled the number 1 spark plug wire off and it went dead. Then repeat with number 2 and little to no change. Then 3 and 4 went dead. So my thinking is the number 2 injector is bad. I also read on another thread something about a fuel system cut off when the brakes are pressed??? Never heard of it. Can some one please shed some light on this for me.

PS Truck has been to multiple very good mechanics and stumped them all. This has happened multiple times with different issues. But every time I have been able to depend on my friends here at Yotatech to pull me through and teach the mechanics a thing or two for a change lol. Thanks for every ones help.

There is a fuel system cut that can cause problems when you press the brakes if your idle is too high. But this causes a surging issue, not just bad running when you press the brakes. Sounds like you might have an issue with your brake booster? Like it's causing a vacuum leak when you press the brakes.

And yeah sounds like your number 2 injector needs work but I doubt that's related to your braking issue.

When you say surging could that feel almost like you have warped rotors when you press the brakes. Because it has done that a few times. Which is leading me to believe that it is more than one thing. How can I check to see if I have a vacuum leak on the booster. Also I just thought I have had to add fluid to the booster regularly. Not sure if that would be a sign of a vacuum leak.

You might want to pull the injector harness a part and check the factory crimp connections were the injectors are all spliced together, its not uncommon for those connections to corrode and break.

take the vacuum hose off the booster plug the hose, if your idle goes down then you got a vacuum leak inside the booster and the diaphragm is probably bad. Or you can do it the right way, but yourself a vacuump pump and gauge (might be able to rent one from autozone). pump a vacuum into the booster and see if it holds. The FSM I believe might have a spec on how much vacuum and how to test it.

also if your idle rpm is above ( i think 1200 rpm ???? I might be a little off though) and you press on the brakes the ecu cuts fuel to the motor to help slow you down.

you can also do the above mentioned and drive the truck without the power brake (just be careful) if it doesn't stall, well......

Ok i have found the main issue, which was the #2 injector was leaking. But now it still about goes dead when you put it in gear. I have checked the timing and it is correct. It has a new TPS. The idle is also high when it is not in gear and it is not smooth. Where do I look next?
