Need Detailed Locations Of Temp Sensors.. Pix would help alot...

Hiya folks.... Well my truck has pop'ed the engine light and the codes I received were 12 (Knock Control Sensor Signal) & 25 (Air Fuel Ratio Lean) I noticed that the temp gauge was acting irratic and fluttering from normal operating temp to the cold side. From the research I did I noticed that the Water Temp Sensor can cause a false readout for a code 12. Has anyone had this issue? and also, does ANYONE have an EXACT location for this sensor? I have looked everywhere online, in my Chilton book and even asked the parts dept. at the stealership and they had a "Blowup" of it and it showed it as being on the Pass. side where as my chilton says the Drivers side.. Which is it? Anyone have a picture?? I know that the 22RE has TWO temp sensors, one being on the EFI.. the other on the block. Anyone have pix of the location of these two sensors? Also, I am going to put in a new o2 sensor to try and get the 25 code to go away. Would putting on a header cause this issue? Any feedback, help or pix would be GREATLY appreceated! Thanks!!!

Chances are that your O2 sensor is causing both codes. If your O2 is giving a rich condition all the time then the ECU will try to lean it out even though it is not rich. This may cause exsessive spark knock which will give a knock code. I would change the O2, reset the ecu and see what happends. In my experiance sometimes both those codes will set very fast and be stored without knowing it. This could be due to a misfire or some other irregularity that happends.

Also if it is an Extra cab truck check that the O2 wires have not melted to the exhaust as they are routed very close and this has happend to many people including myself.

Thanks for te reply Flash! I still went ahead and ordered a temp sensor from NAPA. The gauge is still fluttering so I figure I may as well fix it.. I have the new o2 sensor in and the check engine light has not come back onas of yet.. granted only a 20 min drive.. but we'll see if that cleared it all up.. Thanks for the info!! Gosh I love this place!!

the prob w/ the bosche ones is that they're not long enough. They're slightly short which doesn't allow them to get an accurate reading. go w/ the stock replacement and you'll be happy.

Get the stock O2 sensor. I believe it's Denso or NGK.

Since I have already installed it I can't really take it back. I'll use it untill it craps out and then go with the toyota one.

Would still like to know the exact location of the 2 temp sensors that are on the 22RE.. I have both sensors but would like to know the right area to find them in..

I drew a box around the sensors in the pic if you still need to know their locations.

The left (brown) sensor is for the cold start injector and the right (green) sensor is for the ECU. The engine will run crappy if the right one is unplugged and will be hard to start (impossible if very cold outside) with the left one unplugged. I know this because I was trying to find a place to install my aftermarket temp gauge and didn't really find out what these sensors were before replacing them with mine. Well when my truck started acting funny I knew what was the cause.

Edit - The sensor for the temp gauge in the cluster is on the intake manifold between the 2nd and 3rd intake ports where the mounting flange meets the head.

The temp sensor for the gauge and the temp sensor for the ECU are different, btw...
