mystery smoke: steering column on 1st Gen 4Runner

i was driving on the freeway in my 88 4runner and started coming from my steering colum. then it went away after i got off the freeway. my speedo cable squeeks and rubs on something. could that be the problem?

Was it electrical mystery smoke?
How's that rubber gromet around your steering shaft?
Is there something on your exhaust manifold, smoking into the cab?

I'd be willing to bet that it's an electrical short somewhere in the steering column.
Pull the cover off and search for exposed and melted wiring.
It's pretty obvious to see.
If that's not the case, look around your speedo cable.
Is your speedo cable hot after the freeway trips? feel it next time..
