My take on Blu's Air Silencer Removal Mod 2nd Gen.

Graphics intensive!

ATTN 1st Gen Owners -- Read Here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...898#post447898

First off...Great mod! Thanks guys for all the needed input. THIS IS A MUST DO MOD!

BEST OF ALL...NO MANDREL BEND!

Parts:
2 heavy duty 3" to 3" PVC pipe couplings (they come with with clamps. 3" to 2" also available and recommended) . $6.99 each at Home Depot
1 13 or 14" piece of stainless steel flex muffler tubing (3" inch diameter) $15 @ NAPA. The high quality thick guage stuff not the cheap stuff.
1 1/4" to 1/4" 90 degree bend brass fitting (threaded on one end and hose lock on the other)
1 1/2" to 5/8" straight brass fitting (1/2 to 1/2 will do also. Same thread as above).
O-Rings and nuts to fit the above (the nuts take some searching, finally found them in a small hardware store. O-rings from the sink section @ Home Depot)

Proceed as follows:

1) bend the pipe to fit (one end on the ground, the other in your hand). Smack the middle of the pipe with a big rubber mallet till it fits the bend. This step is really cathartic.

2) Measure and final fit the pipe.

3) Drill your holes 1/16th bigger than the threaded ends of the fittings in order to have an easy install (I drilled them the same and had to hammer em in, not recommended but the threads came through it ok). Tighten it all up really tight and use lock tight on the nuts to make sure they do not come loose. When drilling stainless, use a slow drill and plenty of oil, it will cut like butter...Olive oil will work in place of machine oil

4) remove your old silencer and install the new one. If your engine runs rough after install, you need to tighten all the clamps till it runs smoothly.

Noticable breathing difference and tone coming from the intake. Also a noticable increase in power. How much I dunno but hey, it runs alot better!

Nice work! You mihgt consider taking that flex hose to an exsost shop and have them bend a piece of tubing to the same shape. You can get even more performance with a smooth pipe rather than flex hose.

Nice work. Can you feel a difference in performance? Without the silencer, is the intake loud?

Thanks guys. Yup I can definitely feel it. I know I'm doing at least 8-10hp more just by feel alone. As to the smooth pipe the reason I went this route is I had an impossible time finding a mandrel bend. Some of the guys posted ideas in a different thread but by that time I had it in my head to use the flex.

I'm sure not losing much by those ridges as you can tell by the smile on my face. The waffle ridges in the original tubing slow down the air a heck of alot more than these...The loss is mininal I think.

Oh yeah. the intake does sound alot cleaner and has a nice little moan to it now!!! Thumbs up on the mod and hats off to the guys that came up with it (Blu)!

Nice job ctcost,
looks like flexable exhaust tubing, the ridges inside shouldn't be a real issue if that's the case.
Just one thing to be aware of. Be sure the nuts holding the fittings in place have some type of lock-tite to help hold them tight (don't want them rascals going inside the intake).
Not a bad job overall, and I like the price and the throaty sound too.
Wanna see mine??

All locked in tight Dublin. Definitely don't want one of those moving it's way up towards the intake do we?

That looks great! What was it you said in the other thread? "Nice to be able to reach the sparkplugs?" Yup!!!

Beer.

Looks great, man. This is the first I've heard of this mod (I'm a noob here), I may do this next week on my 92. This weeks, I'm working on de-chroming. I've had the grill and corners off all day working on that. Getting ready to put the grill back on right now. The corners look cool...can't wait to see it all in the daylight tomorrow.

Going all black? I'll vouch for this mod anytime. It's like night and day. No more flooring it on an uphill onramp to get up to freeway speeds!!! I know they went a little overbore on my engine when they did the rebuild...That helped too...Think the next mod to try is TRunner's high flow catalytic converter.

Haven't noticed any problems at all Mikro. Nothing but pluses...also, not having to stomp on the gas all the time saves some milage. Even coasting in a parking lot the motor sounds like it's breathing better.

Oh also, the infamous 3.0 tick with the windows down is now overshadowed by a deeper throatier nice intake tone.

ctcost, I'm calling around to find the parts now...hopefully I can do this tomorrow. Sounds like a cool little project.

One question...I'm not clear on where/how you used the o-rings. Can you give me the lowdown on that?

Thanks!

Edit...yea, I'm going to de-chrome...I am not sure the chrome is going to be paintable, though. I heard I would need self-etching primer, which shouldn't be any harder than regular primer...but I am not sure how it will hold up. I took the grill and corners off yesterday and primed/painted them. I think it looks kewl. I may just do the valance next. Then the mirrors. I'm on the fence about the bumpers, even though I want the chrome to go!

I think they are used to make a seal between the fittings and the flex hose.

Hi Greg: Yeah the O-rings I put between the nut and the inside wall of the pipe. On one I did this on the inside and outside but found out it was onlu needed on the inside. Good luck on bringing it all together...Post a piccy when when your done!

OK, so the o-rings will have to be the size of the tube. So these are to seal the air from the couplings and the intake tube? Wouldn't the hose clamps do an adequate job at this? I'm heading to pick up the goods now...I think the fittings were located, gotta head over and check it out. Everything else seems fairly easy to find.

I'll report back later...
