So earlier today my wheel fell off due to "lugnut malfunction"
(Long story short my impact wrench didnt due jack crap to tighten these things)

Anyways, the wheel came off when i was on dirt, so now the brakes drag in the rear and it makes all kinds of squeeks.

what should i look for on the brake drum pads that would indicate severe damage?

note: truck is fine, just dragged across some loose soil.

is the brake backing plate bent up into the drum?

Dont torque them with an impact you have no way of telling how tight they are.

Torque them with a ratchet or bar or something

Your backing plates are probably bent into the drum, just get a screwdriver in there and bend them back out

What algranger said...always use a torque wrench to ensure tightness, then re-check them at 60 miles.

yeah always make sure your nuts are tight by checking with a torque wrench, there is also special extensions that will somewhat twist when you have it tight enough and they are cheap, also there is diffrent torque values from alluminum wheels to steel wheels. straighten out your backing plates and you should be fine.

Being on sand, I can see how the backing plate could have been pushed in some and be dragging on the drum, but that's just metal to metal contact, and shouldn't really cause as much dragging as it would noise. The backing plate is stiff metal sure, but not stiff enough to cause enough pressure against the drum to make a noticable dragging.

Have you pulled the drum off yet? Maybe some dirt and debris made it's way inside the drum and is keeping the moving parts in there from moving freely.



And as far as bending the drum? I hardly think that you'll do that after it hitting dirt... I dropped and drug mine across concrete for about 10 feet once, and I had no warpage

Backing plates/big dust cover thingy
was bent underneath the drum and i didnt see it in the darkness.

I just did this tonight! Same tire too, rear driver side.

What did you do to repair? Or was it not bad based on distance traveled? I went about 3 times your distance unfortunately as I was on a super steep grade... tire took off like a well, like a tire rolling down a steep grade.

Luckily the tire stopped eventually and nobody was hit or hurt.

And as mentioned after putting the wheel back on that brake/drum/? makes a wee bit of noise when free wheeling. When braking the noise stops.

Any additional thoughts? As too damage or ???

I too have aluminum aftermarket MOMO wheels.
