My New Old '87 4runner (4x4, 5 spd, 22re)
Hello all. Just a little background info. I'm a gear head. I've owned several 2nd gen mr2 turbos, but I just sold my last 91 turbo and picked up a 1987 4x4 5 speed 4runner.
I have been bit by the offroad bug. Learning a new platfrom is gonna be fun. It's a nice change going from a lowered rwd rocket to a slow 4x4 22re. Speed bumps aren't so scary anymore.

Anyway! here's a pic.
I picked her up from Oceanside, CA a few days ago. I live in the Inland Empire. (Ontario, California)
The bad part is trans only has 1st, 2nd, and 4th gear, so i had to deal with that on the 100 mile trip home.

If anyone in Socal could recommend a shop to rebuild my tranny that would be cool.
OR
If anyone is selling a used one I would like to buy it. Shifting from 2nd to 4th is a ~2k rpm drop and the truck hates it so it pretty much sits and I dont drive it around at the moment

Welcome. I just bought a white 89 two weeks ago. I have a few issues with mine that the guys here have already helped me with. Seems to be a good bunch. Good luck with your trans, hope you get it on the road soon.

Welcome! I think you'll enjoy having a truck! I bought my 4runner when I sold my old CRX and haven't looked back since. Well I do have a turbo civic and a street bike for days I want to go fast, but I couldn't picture being without a wheeler again!
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you get that one for? I was in the market for another last week down here in SD and I think I might have seen that one posted.

I was the second person to look at it. He was a cool dude. Most likely a pot smoker. haha. He said the guy who looked before me just wanted to use it for daily driving, but he was glad to sell it to me since I was planning on takin it off road. He even showed me a trail during the test drive!!!! haha
I was looking multiple times a day for weeks for a 4runner.
Anyway, A local from the MR2 boards is selling me a rebuilt w56 by calminitrucks for a super cheap price. So I'll probably buy the clutch, swap the trans and be done with it.
Another funny thing. He told me timing was off and probly needed timing chain done. The truck wasn't happy in low rpms, but once it got in the upper range it felt smoother. I took a look at the distributor earlier today and it was on FULL RETARD! WTH?! You never go full retard

If I were to guess I'm sure its the syncros. I wouldnt think its the fork.. as 1st 2nd 4th and reverse shift very smoothly. Other than that, it could use a tune up. Ignition still isn't smooth enough after advancing the dizzy.
