My hubs won't lock

AISIN hub locks will sometimes lock with ease. But other times, will stop half way between free and lock. I have tried driving in reverse, forward, rolling back and forth in neutral. Does anyone have the answer?

Have you took them off and cleaned them and made sure there's nothing broke? Unfortunately that's about all you can do to diagnose those. I'd say since sometimes you can't turn it all the way that something's broke or it's dirty in there and some grit is binding it up. If nothing looks broke just clean 'em up real good and regrease them and give it a whirl...

And remember, it is always good to put your truck in four wheel drive whether you really have to or not. It lubes them up which keeps them in good shape. I try to put mine in 4WD at least twice a month just to lube.

Just to clarify: I think you were trying to say lock your hubs at least once a month for a few miles to lube them up. Good idea.

To the original poster: Do not shift into 4WD with the hubs locked and drive on dry pavement, you'll bind up the drivetrain.

As far as diagnosing, take your hubs apart and check out whats going on inside. It'll be a learning experience and they're not that complex. There is probably something broken and/or dirt/grit inside. If all else fails, replace them. They're not that expensive and easy to uninstall/install.

Thank you to all you guys for your help. Can I clean with a carb and choke ckeaner, and then what is the relube process. Thanks again

How easy should the hubs be to lock and unlock? My drivers side is super easy to lock, yet the passanger side is really hard.

They should be smooth as silk.

I'm sorry but carb cleaner may not do the trick. A full disassemble is not too hard, followed by a thorough wash in mineral spirits and a brush, and then liberal regreasing.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to clean them for you inside and out if you want to ship them to me. I've done a good many pairs of these already, and have actually sold a few to the guys on the boards here.

Actually, now that I think about it, the o-ring between the dial and the hub face is often the culprit to crappy action. I'm sure you can buy a new one somewhere, but I'm not really sure where a good source is...

Rustbucket,
Thaks for the offer. I have found a great diagram with step by step instructions for the dismantle and reinstalation. For any one who need this, the url is posted below.

Disassembling and cleaning/regreasing a hub is actually really easy. Takes about an hour, maybe two. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...d/hub_rebuild/

Trail Gear sells just the o-ring you speak of.
