looks really good .... what mods you plan on doing

Twisty 07-06-2006 04:28 PM

Looks great :great:.....what are the brand and size of your rims?

1985 4Runner 07-06-2006 05:15 PM

cool truck!

Bumpin' Yota 07-06-2006 05:19 PM

Its coming along nicely! :)

Just gotta swap the two front fenders, the bumper end caps and she'll be set!

(you could also get a uniball long travel front IFS kit and get fiberglass front fenders too! :D)

Sonofmayhem 07-06-2006 08:11 PM

x2 or even like a caddy 2 kit

^VooDoo^ 07-06-2006 08:46 PM

Looks good, I pass by your way every weekday to work.

d0ubledown 07-06-2006 09:18 PM

nice start :great: soon enough you'll be up and dentin' up that shiny paint!

GunNut 07-06-2006 09:56 PM

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

twisty_toy94 - The rims are Pro Comp Xtreme's 16x7. I picked them up on Craigslist for whoppin $100 for the set. :great: They were used, but not abused. I couldn't justify spending too much money on the truck since I only bought it for $500.

Elton - Well the photo you saw on my profile is over a month old. Since then I've added a Downey Bikini Top and I also have a set of Super Swamper TSL Radials 265/80/16 coming soon. I just ordered them online and I'm expecting them mid next week... hopefully.

Bumpin' Yota - Shortly after that photo was taken, I tightened down the bumper and finally put on the end caps. I'm not sure about cleaning up the fenders, specially since I plan on taking it out in the dessert and mountains a lot when I go shooting which is pretty frequent. In other words, I'm not going for the show look. What's a Uniball Travel Kit? I was thinking of raising it another 2". Given it's not too expensive. Will the travel kit do that? (This question goes out to Sonofmayhem as well)

1985 4Runner - Thanks for the compliment 85' 4Runner! You got an awesome rig yourself!!!

^VooDoo^ - Stop by sometime, maybe you can share some knowledge with a noob.

d0ubledown - Nice Paint? ha! Far from it doubledown. That's just the effects of a normal sunny day in California and an old camera. ha. Actually I just got done waxing her up that day when I took the photo. That was the first bath I gave her since I got her. Up close is a totally different story all together. ha!

Thanks again everyone, thanks for letting me share! Please keep your suggestions coming. Like I mentioned, I'd like to raise her up another 2" but with a little one on his way this October, the budget is a bit on the tight side. Any thoughts?

Go YotaTech!!!

Oops.. sorry for not giving info on the truck...

it's an 89' SR5, V6 (commonly referred to as the 3.slow.) ha! She's got about 230,000 miles on her but the motor is still strong.

Tofer 07-06-2006 10:09 PM

i was going to guess its an 89.... the look and feel of a 2nd gen wiht the removable top of the 1st gen.. i think the 89 is the 2nd most sought after, behind an 85.

I never realized that, but you're absolutely right. The bad thing about that is, the parts are mixed up also. Some are 1st gen and others are 2nd gen. Take for example when I broke the Torsion Bar bolt when trying to remove it. Well, I went to the shop I usually go to for parts, and they gave me a first gen bolt... after the 4th time going back there to complain that it's not the right part, they finally figured out that my truck must have the 2nd gen bolt. I just hope I don't brake anything else, that wasn't fun driving back and forth.

Well for what it's worth, its certainly nice to hear that it's the 2nd most sought after truck... now I have to rig a starter kill. ha!

Tofer 07-06-2006 10:39 PM

by sought after i didnt mean by people trying to steal it, but its more desirable to own. :D the 85 take first because of the solid front axle and EFI.

lol.. I understood what you meant ToferUOP. I was just messin. Yeah those front axles are incredible! Man! Was that the only year it came out? Or did the 84's have them too?

turboale 07-07-2006 08:16 AM

pre 85 were solid axle, but they were carburated. In 85 they got fuel injection and still had the Solid axle. in 86 they kept the fuel injection and went to IFS (Independent Front Suspension) You will see/hear that term here a lot. :great:

rentedmule 07-07-2006 08:44 AM

Great looking truck, makes me miss my '84! The long-travel kits look amazing but I don't think they're cheap - check out http://chaosfab.com/toycaduni.html

4unner4life 07-07-2006 05:48 PM

great progress! I love seeing progress like that!
I am a 3rd gen guy but i am liking the 1st gens more and more.

F0RSAKEN 07-07-2006 06:19 PM

I usually prefer black steelies on a black/offroad truck, but damn I love those wheels. I may have to get those instead of my original plan...maybe get some and powdercoat them black...yes thats it.

GunNut 07-07-2006 09:21 PM

Thanks again all!

F0RSAKEN - Yeah I thought about the black steelies too, actually had some stock steelies on them when I first got the rig but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on these. I bought the set for $100 for all 4. Plus, all my friends seem to have the black rims, just thought I'd change it up a bit. Guess I was thinking more Old School look. I remember these trucks back in the day, and nobody had the black steelies then. That's not to say black wouldn't look good also. Post photos of your rig when you get it done please.

4unner4life - Thanks for the feedback! :D I bought this truck just so I can have a "Home Depot" truck. I thought having the top off will allow me to load things without problems. But it slowly evolved to what it is now. Who knows what it'll look like in a year. Man, toys get me in trouble! :D

rentedmule - Thanks for link! I'll have to do a search on what the long travel actually does. I think I have an idea but I'll have to research a bit more. The link is definitely a good start. Thanks again!

turboale - Thanks for the knowledge. I certainly appreciate it. It's nice to know tid bits about these awesome trucks. I'm still amazed on how long they last. Well I guess that's why we own 4 Toyotas... :D

Anyone have thoughts, ideas, suggestions on an affordable lift, please don't hesitate to chime in. Have a good weekend everyone!!!
