Is my 91 Toyota Transmission compatible with a 93 Toyota Transmission?

Good day to all. There are a few questions I would like answered, hoping someone can give me some insight on what I have done wrong. I am not sure if I have made the right decision. I have a 91 Toyota 22re 2 wheel drive,5 speed(manual) that I needed a transmission for. Due to financial issues I went to the junk yard and purchased a tranny from a 93 Toyota ,5 speed manual 2.4 liter, 2 wheel drive. I took my original trans with me to compare, which looked good at the time until I got home. I realized the speedometer was electrical unopposed to it being a screwed in cable.

My questions: is the trans compatible? if yes, how will the speedometer work? I have attached some photos for viewing. thanks.

Should be possible to exchange the sensors

Do you have a W55 tans? Trans model should be on drivers door.

It looks like the trans you got from the junkyard has an electric speedometer. The 1991 has a mechanical speedometer.

I have a 92 2wd 5 speed, and it's an electric speedometer.

Not sure if the 93 can be converted over to mechanical. AutoZone sells a reman trans for my 92 that costs $795. Honestly, I would save up the money, beg, borrow, or what ever to buy a reman.

yea , mine is a w55 ! I have read and was told that from 88 till 95 was compatible.
I sure did not see this coming, the junk yard don't give refund, only exchanges.
I will have to wait until an earlier model comes in. I came this far, I have not
yet given up. I am hoping some one with more knowledge on this will chime in an give
me some hope. You know, when the Taco is down you can't eat. LOL. thanks.

Swap the whole sensor. should be a simple direct swap. you may want to get the O-ring for the sensor

Good deal!

That's a good picture. Thanks

I am pretty sure the transmissions themselves are the same, just the sending unit should be different, but should insert and attach to the transmission the same.

You can remove both the mechanical and electrical senders and compare to what is shown above.

thanks for the pics roughridn-sob Lol , it made all the difference. very motivational !

Well guys, thanks for the time and assist. I made the sensor swap, was not as hard as I thought
it would be. FYI, for those who will make the swap in the future, the nut that is holding
down that little metal plate DO not lift it UP or you will brake a piece off, from
the sensor itself, LOL. After you unscrew the bolt, Slide the metal plate out ! thanks again. know I am
in the process of putting the tranny back in. thanks for the positive vibez.

Whatever you do don't buy a transmission from Vato Zone, or anything other than motor oil for that matter. The big box stores sell nothing but junk. Have a reputable local shop rebuild YOUR transmission for you if a reman is the route you take.

Yap! running strong again, thanks for the assist. I must say though,
I was thinking about changing the radiator, still having thoughts
of how water got into the tranny fluid. what are your thoughts?

snippits 02-10-2019 01:14 PM

It's a manual trans, so it did not come from the radiator that's for sure!

Glad you got it the new used transmission up and running.

Are you going to keep the old core?

Diego toyota 02-11-2019 05:19 PM

Actually, I had no plans for it.
