Is it possible your valves are adjusted too tight? When lash is set too tight, its quiet, then you burn a valve.

I heard you need to adjust after 20K, so around 3 years or so. My truck makes one hell of a racket past 3K partially due to the york air compressor, partly due to the worn valve adjusters.

i seem to remember the owners manual saying every 3k miles cause i was shocked it was recommenced that often, of course i don't have that book any more. i just looked in my haynes and it says every 15k miles or 12 months but it also says oil change every 7500 miles or 12 months. so i don't know

The 22RE has a gentle tick that always forms a strange rhythm at idle. I love it. If it didn't have it, I wouldn't know it was running

Take a long screw driver, pull the valve cover, look down the front where the chain is, take the screwdrive and smash the tip into the tensioner. Voila!! chatter!!!

One of the dumbest threads ever.....................congrats!!

most toyota 22re's have a lifter tick, yours was probably adjusted right before they sold it. i don't mind a little bit of a tick it tells me that the valves are closing all the way, i need to adjust my valves again, i set them 1thousands bigger gap than the warm gap setting when i assembled the motor. need to get around to re-setting them and re torquing the head bolts real soon.

If you want the tick back, crank down the nuts that hold the tappet cover to the head. Squash that little rubber grommet and she'll sound like a diesel.

Made a call today to the dealership. In their manual, it's 30k or every 3yrs....whichever comes first.

The owner's manual for my 1994 pickup says that the valves get adjusted every 30k miles or 36 months. That seems about a proper interval.

As for the lack of a ticking noise, the idea of "fixing" the chain tensioner seems like a good one. Alternatively, you could break up that pesky plastic chain guide on the driver's side. For the more ambitious, loosening the rockers until they smack on the underside of the valve cover -- I think that's what I'm going to do. Have to wait until the 30k miles between oil changes comes around though.

Just had another great idea. Get yourself a 98 link timing chain. That should liven things up a bit. 22re.com sells them.
