My 1994 4x4 turbocharged 22re.
Hello everybody, I've been here a little while and I finally was able to get some pictures of my truck and throw together a little info on it.
Truck/Suspension:
1994 Single Cab 4x4 Pickup
31x10.50 BFGs
Cranked up tortion bars
Modified bump stops on the front suspension
Rear is stock
Engine and Modifications:
22-RE
Custom Forged 8:1 compression ratio pistons
Balanced and blueprinted short block assembly
Custom porting on the head
Turbo street camshaft (can't remember exact specs at the moment)
Turbo Header
T3 Super-60 Turbocharger
2.5" downpipe and exhaust
2.5" intake plumbing
Custom intercooler between the frame rails
440cc injectors
SDS fuel and spark mangement system with coil pack conversion
Secondary oil filter
I think im forgetting something
Future plans:
Total chaos suspension upgrade
New paint job
2.6L - 2.7L Stroker kit
Upgraded head and cam
33" something or another tires
The truck runs great and is a pretty good offroader as it is. I spend about 70% of the time on the highway and 30% offroading and it performs well in both situations. It really shines on the highway though. I don't have any dyno numbers for you all at the moment as there are no local dynos. I tested a 0 - 60 time a few days ago with a friend and averaged between 7 and 8 seconds pushing 8psi boost over 5 runs. The engine is built to handle 15 psi on 91 octane gas but apparently my clutch isn't.
I don't have any pics of the engine at the moment, although now that I think of it my avatar is. I'll try to get some soon if anybody is interested. Thanks for looking!

How do you find the turbo for spooling offroad, is it fast enough to give power where its really needed?
Why do you want a stroker kit? Why not just up the boost?

I unfortunately lost my pics of the engine and its too dark out to take any right now. My forum avatar is a small pic of my engine if you can see it. I'll try to take some and post them tomorrow.
The stroker kit increases the torque the engine makes by quite a bit. I used to run 15psi boost until my clutch started to slip so I dropped it to 8psi.
The turbo spools very well with this setup, offroading in 4 low the engine makes enough power to go wherever I want but if for some reason I need boost it spools as low as 2000 rpm. On the highway boost comes on at about 1750 rpm and I hit max around 3000. Overall I'm quite happy with the turbo lag or lack thereof.

Thanks again everybody. I'll have a few pictures of the engine as well as my intercooler setup as soon as I can. The intercooler rests under the lower fan shroud between the frame rails with 2.5" plumbing running to/from it. I'm looking to build a new front bumper and incorporate the intercooler into that with possibly an electric fan behind it so its always getting air flow.
No problem there, always happy to help where I can.
I'd like to say thanks for the tuning advice...

Well, it only took what... 5 months? But I took some pictures of my setup, its really dirty under there forgive the mess... I'm 1/2 way in the middle of rewiring everything... but hey, no mess no fun Hah!

nice on the rig and everything but.....a t3 super 60? the wheels on that turbo were designed in the 1960s. Not exactly an ideal turbo nowadays, especially on a 4 cyl. If you get the chance, upgrade to a straight T3 turbo, or even better (for that motor) a T28 of some sort.....you'll get much less lag and probably better power thanks to newer wheel designs.
ok, wait a minute, is that intercooler pointing straight downwards? looks like it in the pic. If you're going to mount it like that, at least mount it at an angle so that airflow hits it, similar to the v-mount idea going on most import racers/drifters.
All in all though, very nice

Actually, I'm pretty happy with how the turbo spools, boost comes on almost instantly and it pulls hard through the top end. As far as the intercooler goes, I wasn't too into getting rid of the A/C so a front mount intercooler is out. You are correct, it is facing down, I fabbed up a scoop that is bolted to the intercooler and sealed around the edges, air goes straight into the scoop and through the intercooler. My intake air temperature gauge always reads about 10 - 20 degrees above ambient air temperature (under full boost). Eventually I want to build a new bumper and incorporate the intercooler into it so the fan pulls air through it, but thats going to happen a little further down the road. I was gonna say, I have a big Spearco FMIC that is a little twisted from a wreck I was in with my Z, but as far as I can tell it should still hold 30psi. If you're interested in it or can find a place for it I'll cut ya a killer deal.........but I know how tight the engine bays are on these damn trucks so I know there's no room for it! LOL.

Thanks for the offer, you're right, its very cramped up front, its a love hate relationship between me and the a/c... i love that i have it, i hate that it keeps me from having a front mounted intercooler. Still... I'm amazed at how well the scoop/intercooler performs.

This is the kinda thread that's making me want to just rebuild my good ol 22RE and put a turbo on it or go to a factory RTE motor. Anybody have any opinions on giong with a factory motor over say an LC SuperCharger or another aftermarket Turbo system?

I've owned the LC supercharger. If you want a bolt on mod that's easy to install, it's probably the most power you can bolt on to your truck.
Price is significant at $3k. I don't know how LC has it setup to work with factory EFI, they had problems at one time.
Note this supercharger is very inefficient. It's a positive displacement power, so it'll boost just off idle, but for every 2 hp it produces, it's going to suck up 1 in turning the SC belt. It's a big mileage hit.
Custom turbo is your best bang for the buck in terms for hp per dollar. It can be problematic to install and get running right, mainly due to the EFI side.

How have you tuned your efi for the Turbo set up? I went from a stock 22re and had it all rebuilt and a t3/t4 put on and honestly I can't get it running right. My 0 to 60 is like 30 something
