Loose A/T Shift Lever

My 1989 V6 SR5 lever rattles much at high speed. What is it missing, or what wore out or is mis-adjusted?

First thing that comes to mind is checking the tranny mount from underneath. Rubber might be shot allowing it to vibrate. Also, what's the cause of the vibration...? Might check to see if the driveline is out of balance.

Im not sure if your shifter is different than mine since it looks like your 2wd. But it was at the base of the shifter where it rotates. Hope that makes sense

there are rubber bushings in the shifter linkage under the plastic trim that rot over time. they were a real pain to replace. i just started pulling things apart. it was so long ago i don't really remember how it all came apart except that i had to pull the rubber grip with the overdrive button off the shifter to pull the trim over it and the spring from the overdrive button flew out and i lost it.

I have a 96 4Runner, shifter is loose, just wondering what the cost would be at a shop.

its not actually all that bad to do yourself, you just need small fingers. lol!
Take off the shifter consul cover, the gear indicator plate around the shifter, unbolt the shifter brackets from the floor. (4wd shifter too) take the handles off the shifters (dont forget how the buttons and o/d button go back together, there is a spring that likes to go for a jump when you pull the button out of the shifter handle) Go under the truck on the mid/ pass side of the trani and take off the shifter linkage (its the only long arm off the side/ top of the trani, its a cotter pin, and a nut if im not mistaken) and pull the whole assembly out through the floor, thats the hard part, after that figuring out that you have x2 rotten 1" long tube bushings and replacing them is easy.
G-luck, hope I didnt miss any steps, I did mine on an '89 v6 last summer.

I love my 4runner to much to work on it, I'm not a mechanic, that would be a problem. I do appreciate all the instructions but I don't have the slightest clue where the cotter pin is or what it looks like. However I will pass this information on to my son.
Thanks!
Debbie
