Loose shifter? How to tighten?

1992 3.0L 3vze Runner.
Auto Tranny

I have had my auto tranny shifter loose/wobbley for the longest time. It won't jump or slip, just the connection is loose and it rattles around. I have looked at the thing, and am now wondering if there is a way that you guys know how to tighten it up. I am praying I dont have to play with the tranny to do it. Can it be done from the inside of the cab?

Thanks

There are at least a BAZILLION threads on this; replace the shifter bushing!

Search on "Shifter bushing"... the answer to your question you will find, young jedi!

I cut new ones on my lathe from nylon bar stock. What a difference. I also replaced the rubber grommets on the shift levers. The shifter is nice and crisp now.

He's talking about an AUTO. The seat bushing is for manuals. Sorry I don't have any ideas for you BrunswickYota.

Mine is like that in my '86. I think there is a bushing that can be reached after removing the shifter console. I have yet to take everything apart to see how it can be fixed but I don't think it's too diffucult. I have yet to find a thread on here about it.

Hey there. Take a look at this link. Its not for your automatic but a very similar one. They may even be the same part numbers but I am not sure. I have the same issue with my diesel auto but has yet to take it apart and fix it. Its not bothering me that badly yet. These guys might be able to look up the PN for you too if you ask them to. They have the Toyota EPC.

That looks like what we need. It will be a while before I get to the dealership to check part #'s, but the diagram is helpful.

Thanks

is the shift lever inside the cab wobbly? if that is the problem, there is a phillips screw at the base of the plastic handle that you need to tighten. if the entire assy is loose, then the linkage is the culprit. that would entail a trip beneath to snug up things.
