Question Loose Manual shifter (stick)

Okay, i am not the mechanically savvy person. I am totally new to this stuff so I apologize for the very vague descriptions rather than the exact name.

Here is my ordeal. I own a '95 4Runner with a 3L i believe. It is a manual transmission. Last weekend, I was driving up to Koke'e and towards the end of my ride, my shifter (stick shift? don't know the proper name...) started having more play while in gear than it is supposed to.

Now, all of a sudden, when in neutral, I can move the shifter all the way to the left to where it intrudes on my right knee space. I am still able to drive it fine but I would like to know if this is a dangerous situation and how I can fix it. getting into first has now become a tricky act. HAHA

You should know that the gears still work fine and i can get it into all gears, though not without caution. It seems to me that before, there was a set path that one would follow to get into first from neutral, and then through the normal progression. However, now it seems as though i have to just mimick because there doesn't seem to be a path to follow anymore.

I am sorry if this has been posted before. i tried searching but because i don't know the proper names of things, searching has become very difficult on a forum where most know exactly what they are talking about.

Again, thank you very much for your time and God Bless and Aloha!

There like 2 bushings in the shifter a bushing on top that is cone shaped the other is a hard peice of plastic that fits over a ball socket down in there it's pretty easy to replace.
I think there was a old writeup old tech into on brian4x4 http://www.brian894x4.com/Shifter.html

Judging by the description given on those sites, I have a positive feeling that is exactly my problem. I will put those parts on order and when I start the work, I will post again. Thank you very, very much for your time and replies.

Mahalo and Aloha!
