The previous owner told me that he had replaced the timing chain. I finally found some time to get the block on the engine stand and tear into it today. I had already figured that there was a catastrophic failure at one point because I found a piece of a rocker arm hanging out in the head. My rocker assembly is fine, so this piece is from a previous repair and got left behind. Nice.
Once I had the block on the stand, I turned it upside down and removed the oil pan. Looks like this oil screen was working overtime. (NOTE: I didn't place that stuff there. All that crap was just sitting there exactly the way you see it.)


I figure I will check all the tolerances and probably do a ring job while I have it all apart. Any suggestions on what to look for if there had been a previous valve crunching good time with this engine? I noticed bits of aluminum on the oil screen that I can't seem to place, so I have no idea where it broke off from.
I already had the head planed, but wasn't planning on doing the same to the block. I can still see a some cross-hatching on the cylinder walls, but there seems to be a little bit of a groove at the top.
Is there anything I should be doing now that I have the whole freaking thing apart?

Looks like the lip pieces from the timing cover and chain damper. When my chain broke, it took out the lip under the crank gear, left me with a gift in the pan. This is one reason why I think it's a good reason to drop the pan when you do a timing chain, to clean cover, guide, chain, whatever, junk out.

The big piece and most of the small pieces are parts of the driver's side plastic timing rail.

That's why its a good idea to replace it with a steel rail like the one engnbldr sells.

I have to say that is one of the CLEANEST oil screens I've ever seen ('cept for the crap on it, of course); there's no sludge at ALL!

the large black pieces are indeed parts of the old plastic timing chain guides. I have no idea what the aluminum pieces are from. I can't find any spot on the timing cover where these could have broken off. I'll compare it to my new timing cover and see if I can figure something out.
The previous owner put timing chain guides where the passenger side is plastic and the backing guide (driver's side) is metal. Is that normal? Or did he just replace the one side? Are the metal guides that engnbldr sells metal on both sides?

Well if you found bits of metal, even if it was soft aluminum, you should do the bearings while you have it apart as well. Why go as far as a ring job & leave the rest of it?

That's just my .02 & I understand about lack of funds etc. but I am one of those people that like to wrench on things before they break & I absolutely hate wrenching on it after it breaks.
