Lock for gas tank cover

Mine is pretty much dead from rust, hit it with PB blaster today and it seemed to make it even worse. It went from opening maybe once in 5 or 7 turns of the key to like 20 if I am lucky, and my key is starting to get all bent out of shape.
I rigged the latch open because I am that worried it will never open again.

The dealership wants $92 for a lock cylinder and key...
Any other ideas as to what else will work instead???

My advice... Find a lock cylinder from a donor truck and get it re-keyed to work with your key.

rekey usually costs around 25 bucks.

i have a job, you the one that only works 1 day a week, and browses the internet the whole time !!

and for the record, i would have the 25 or so bucks to get it keyed, if i didnt have to buy a new gas tank.

anyway...
I tried prying, pulling, twisting and pushing on just about anything that moves on this thing, but no dice, google turns up some results but mainly other types of locks...

Take the lock cylinder out, and take it to a lock smith. They can take it apart and figure out what is going on with your original lock and probably fix it.

I would say get a locking gas cap at a parts store (if gas getting stolen worries you) for about $10-$15, romoving the lock cylinder entirely, and stick a little strong magnet in there in a way that it'll hold the door shut.

of caurse you'll have a little open hole where the lock was, but you could just use it as a "handle" to get the lip open...

and of caurse, if you're not worried about the gas thing, then stick with the old cap and it will be a free fix, assuming you have some sort or magnet lying around you can use...

online parts lookup: http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/
Parts catalog shows this number:69058-35040....then: 69058-35040 was superseded by part number 69058-35170.

$39 from 1sttoyotaparts.com (shows $54 list)

Get it open. Remove the lock cylinder. Use a magnet to hold the door closed. Buy a new lock when you can afford it.

Done.

Just fyi the locks on these gas doors aren't going to stop anyone from taking gas lol you can pry them open so easily with the locks locked anyways, or they'll just drill a hole in your gas tank and drain it into a bucket...might as well just have them take your gas and not ruin your gas tank...

I just went to Lowes and bought a lock for a cabinet. Worked great, and only $5.00

Gas cap cover

My lock failed and the local locksmith could not fix it. Yota dealership wanted $58.00 for a new one. Solution: take the snap ring off the back of the cover lock and remove the latch. replace the lock (without latch lever) to give the appearance that the cover is locked. Buy a strong cabinet magnet at your local hardware store and install with some sheet metal screws. this will keep the cover closed. If you must have a locking cap, you can buy one for around $15.00 which is much cheaper than replacing the Toyota lock.

I am a locksmith and I rekeyed myentire truck a few weeks ago. the hardest part about the gas door lock was getting the face cap off without ruining it even with a special tool thats made for removing these. if you want you could send it to me and ill fix it for free. and it will match your existing key too. pm me if your interested.

you realise this is a 2 year old thread right?

I'm sure he's long since made this a non-issue
