little response from the brakes braking

Hey all,
Great forum! I've been trolling through here for a while bringing my 93 pickup back up to running condition. I got the truck for next to nothing and it was in pretty sad shape, the motor was disassembleed and a few other odds and ends.

Anyway, after finally rebuilding the motor and getting it back on the road i noticed that there is very little stoppng power. When i hit the brakes the pedal is rock solid, travelling around an inch or so. there is no sponginess whasoever, and I get very little response from the brakes. I have replaced the front pads, adjusted the rear brakes, put about 6 onces of fluid through each line trying to bleed the system and the truck still takes forever to stop.

I think it may be the power booster, but am looking for other ideas before I shell out 300 bucks for a new one. The booster is holding a strong vaccuum but it does't feel any different than when the motor isnt running.

thanks for any help

*edit*
The problem ended up being a clogged check valve. While the engine was disassembled a mud dauber had built a nest in it and prevented a vacuum from being applied to the booster. A quick bath in hot water and swab with a q-tip and the truck had all the stopping power in the world.

Probally is the brake booster, or something related to it. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure someone else does.

can you hear a hissing noise when you hit the brakes? if you do then the booster's diaphram may be bad. have you check to see if the rear brakes are operating at all?

no, no hissing I was abe to lock the rear bakes on a dirt road but it took almost all of my weight on the pedal to do it. I pulled the vaccum line off the boster to see if it was holding vacuum and it had a good solid hiss for about a second, so I don't think it is leaking.

I would try pulling and plugging the vacuum line from the booster to see if that changes anything during a SAFE test drive. Open road, no traffic, even your driveway should give you an idea if it's had any effect. That'll either point to or eliminate the booster as the problem.
