Lifting a 91 2wd
I would like to be able to run 235's or 30's on my 2wd, but need to keep the mods to a minimum because of budget concerns. I figured I could crank the torsion bars and get an AAL or rear shackle lift to do this. My first question is, will the stock torsion bars with almost 180k on them be able to handle this or should I look aftermart for new ones? If aftermarket, what brand? Secondly, what's going to ride better, the AAL or shackle lift? My last question is, what brand of shock would you reccommend? I was thinking Bilstein 5100's, but that might be extreem for my truck. Oh yeah, one last thing, what gears would be reccommended to push this? I have no idea what's in it now.
All I want is enough room to fit the tires and to allow suspension movement. The truck sees 100% right now and will probably get used to explore fire road and desert trails in the future. Thanks for any help given! |
I'd just get a 2" body lift. Seems the simplest solution.

I have an 87 2wd. When I first got it I put a 3" BL and 30" tires on it. It rubbed a little but not bad. Later I got the Fabtech Ivan Dan lift for it. All I can tell you is save your money for a 4x4. Lifting a 2wd is cool but you really can't do much with it. If I just took all the money I put into it I could've had a nice 4x4 at the time. Even a locked 2wd still would not out perform a stock open diff 4x4. Also you couldn't drive it in the snow since it was still 2wd. Trust me, save your money for a 4x4.

An even better option would be to SAS the 2wd. Apparently its easier then an IFS. Wouldn't cost more then $1500 and you'd have the best of all worlds.

I guess I should have mentioned I have a Jeep Wrangler, flat fendered, locked on 33's to play with. The toyota is my daily driver.

Do you want the prerunner look?
Ride will suck for a daily driver with that much tbar crank. You can go with drop spindles or long travel. I also had the Ivan Dan and thought it was awesome - unfortunately, they don't make it any more. Fit 31x10.50 with very minor rubbing. I did AAL in the back, and thought it rode well, but I've never used a shackle lift so can't compare. I am sure there are others out there, but here's a start. http://chaosfab.com/vance.html http://www.fabtechmotorsports.com/ht...4_95truck.html |
um...you should be able to fit 31x0.50 without doing anything.....They came stock that way too.... :bigok:
As far as fitting 35's on there, you can get 3" BL and downey rear lift and BJ spacer. You should regear to 5.29. |
