i just put a 22re in my runner and im going to be getting ready to start wheeling with it. Wondering what other peoples experiences are with 4 cylinder 4runners and wheeling?

I'm in the same situation, looking at buying a 4runner with a 22re. Wondering how good it is on the trails, among other things such as towing, speed + efficiency.

the 22re works great off road, no issues at all using a 22re off road. the only issues the 22re has is towing and going up hills at speed on the highway.

It'll hold its weight, except when towing and going up hills at a higher speed, just like Dark Fairytales stated.

Its a reliable, bulletproof motor. It is NOT a horsepower motor, but it has plenty of torque. It's all about gearing.

My 87 4runner 22RE drove from Alabama to Toronto doing 70MPH the whole way up I75. 4th gear on some big hills but I was impressed. I wasn't expecting that from the Toyota. Haven't had it on the trails yet.

it will not be fast at all but it will always get you home if you like to haul stuff like trailers its going to be slow and 4runners cant take tongue weight. for wheeling and bootin around it will be fine and the 22re takes a beating haha.

My 22re has 190K on it, best damn engine ever made. Just don't baby it too much, they get soft in my experience, abuse it just a little and it will out live you. I pulled a heavy boat with mine for years, finally burned the clutch out of it.

Just for the record, and so that the 71 doesn't get jealous, the 292 straight 6 is a very close second.

You lost a whole 7 miles per gallon towing more than the 4Runner weighed on its own?
I've seen 1 ton Chevy's and Fords drop from 18 to 6 mpg towing half their weight.

There have been times trying to crawl up really steep stuff in 4 low where the engine needed more torque, but in 99% of times, it does fine on or off road, has excellent reliability and gets decent milage. You can buy gears for crawling, but they are expensive.

on a trip right now from san diego CA, Las Vegas Nevada, Coral pink Dunes, Bryce, Zion, Cedar Break ...

Great motor its started up every time in freezing cold weather.. but slow on the hills.. some times down to 35mph

I find my 22re doesn't mud bog too well.. but I'm running 32" TSL Super Swampers on factory 4.10's..
I also can't pull more than 70mph with those tires on.. with 31" A/T's I can run 85 mph without too much trouble..
4LO will pretty much handle all your torque needs off-road..

yep. my thoughts exactly. i've been everywhere at the sand dunes with my 22re (even while powering oversized BFG A/T's). i've never been stuck anywhere. not in snow, not in sand, not in mud. and i've even pulled a handful of other trucks out too! every now and then i have problems going up hills on the freeway (it'll drop down to 70-ish mph from 80-ish). also, i've towed a 20 foot speedboat with my truck. but i never left town. there's no chance i could've gotten on the freeway towing the boat. it was tough pulling the boat out of the boat launch, but it was/is possible in 4wd low.

turboboost

They are super mechanically simple motor, and they last forever. They are ridiculously slow though, so you have to make up some of that lost power by gearing. They are easily one of the best motors ever made all time.
