Just "Clicks" sometimes I try to start it.

Sometimes in the morning when it is a little a little cool (50-65 F) and when i get out of school (85-90 F). I have plenty of battery life (brand new battery). I have a 2 Sony Xplod 12's with a 1200W amp, running through 8gauge wire. I dont know if the system would cause this problem, but it is quite annoying. Usually when it clicks i wait a few secs and try again, turn the key all the way to lock and try again, run the truck down through all the gears and back to park (AT), but most of hte time i jsut get "click" :dunno: . I am starting to get annoyed at this, especially when I am trying to start it and my friends are walking by laughing at the "click". BTW it is a 88 V6, AT. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

searching will have all your answers, but go to 4crawler.com he has a rebuild kit that should fix the problem.

mine was doing the same for awhile. first i just assumed it was a loose ground wire. but after checking most of them. still had the problem so i went ahead and replaced the starter (mine was 14 yrs old anyway) and problem solved. there is a great tech write up on here for it too. Hope that helps

aight yall i appreciate it. :)

just did the starter rebuild. its super easy. the only hard part was getting the starter out. thankfully i have a 1" body lift which made it easier. one hint, since you have the 3.0, is that it helps to take the header heat sheild off first its only 2 bolts and frees up a lot more room.

881stGenRunner 04-24-2006 06:29 PM

thats cool bout the header but i dont have headers i still have the stock manifolds, but will look into the rebuild thx.

AcidicDreams 04-25-2006 01:28 AM

well if the starter eventually turns the motor over with full force get a new one... if you always have to jump it when it does this it's the battery... or I should say your amp...

Racer944 04-25-2006 07:03 AM

my bet (happens occasionally on our racer) is that the starter is contacting. Best way to adjust the attitude of said starter is with a hammer and a few HARD whacks. It's a little bit more difficult on a lowered street racing 944, but it's still not overly difficult.

curly_c 04-25-2006 09:47 AM

just replace the starter, i had the exact same problem. click click. then it would start. starter was the problem. put in the new starter and no more click.

881stGenRunner 04-25-2006 02:27 PM

cool. How much do it usually cost for a new starter?

KevyWevy 04-25-2006 06:34 PM

manifolds, headers its all the same... i got the stock manifolds. it helps. dude seriously don't get a new starter just rebuild it. new starters are around $100-$130 the new contacts are $30 ($15 each side)

curly_c 04-26-2006 09:03 AM

if you can rebuild it do it i guess. i have no idea how to rebuild one and i didnt know you could just buy the parts. i payed like 130 for a new toyota one from the guy i bought my truck from. and he put it in for me so i didnt have to mess with it. he was a toyota tech and did hundreds of these things and he said mine was the most difficult one hes ever done.

Aight Kevy sounds good my dad know A LOT about cars and can do just about anything he wants...unfortunately he lives in FL and he isnt going to be coming up this week. When he does hopefully we can go get the parts and take care of it. Thanks everyone for all the input ya'll have given!

KevyWevy 04-26-2006 07:07 PM

good. i hate to see people waste their money. here is the link to the instructions...

*edit* oh yeah, if i can do it, your and your dad shouldn't have any problem.

Is there any corrosion on the terminals? Before spending any money, I would try disconnecting the terminals, scraping/cleaning them really good, and make sure you reconnect them good and tight. Scrape them with a wire brush if possible, using some baking soda mixed with water, and let it sit for a bit. Rinse off with water, then reconnect.

881stGenRunner 04-27-2006 02:21 PM

hmm sounds good

PeanutRanger 05-06-2006 09:21 PM

My 4runner did the same thing, click click, start. Snatched(Well Wiggled, Jerked, Stood on Head, Held Tongue Just Right) starter out, filed off carbon off of contacts threw( pushed, cramed, pleaded, prayed) it back in, start everytime! :woo:

881stGenRunner 05-07-2006 03:14 PM

My dad and i jsut replaced it this weekend for like a $90.00 core charge....so not too bad. Can the placement of the starter on the 3.slow be any worse???? Holy crap that thing was soooo hard to get out, i think we had like 2 1/2 feet of extensions on the ratchet!!
