Bump for updates:
bumping for updates and any new info.
just ordered a 89-90 cressida air flow sensor for this mod. and have a couple questions.
i have a k&n kit from back in the day, and i am wondering what will be needed to make this mod work.
how many have successfully completed this mod?
with a 3rd tuning device?
any negatives to this mod?
:edit
and as spectre was listed in this thread they also have ducting that seems might make install easier.

I completed this mod a few months ago and I could not be happier. It gives it SO much more pep. I haven't noticed much of a difference in MPGs. It might have gotten better but it definitely didn't get worse. I recommend this mod to everyone.
Here's a link to my post about it.

I have performed this mod and it is a must do. I have no "3rd tuning device" so it did take an hour or so to make it run properly. Although I would like to use a wideband to properly tune it. I have found that bumping the timing to about 15 degrees helps with this mod. I did perform this mod to a friends truck and we had it done and running in under 2 hours, his did not require near as much tuning as mine did. All in all it is a must do. im getting about 16-18 mpg's and all the power I could hope for. I took a friend in my truck who has a 3vze as well. His eyes lit up when I hammered it. I let him drive it and he couldn't believe how much power and torque my truck has.

did this swap this week. at first did not notice any difference at all, until i adjusted air:fuel cog, richen 5-7 teeth ccw. i do notice an increase in throttle response and acceleration. will hit the highway later today to evaluate top end power.
did not adjust bypass screw nor timing. will look into advancing to 12-14.
pics to come.
just out of curiosity, what kind of adjustments at the air:fuel cog are typical if typical at all, with this swap?
edit: more highway acceleration and increased throttle response in all gears.

This seems like a really awesome mod. I've done a lot of work on my truck but most of it has been repairs, trying to get it back up to what it used to be.
For those who have done it, have you notice any long-term issues? Any fouled plugs that indicate lean or rich conditions? My engine is old, and I don't want to kill it. But I'd love to have more power, especially for when I'm in the Sierras.

No fouled plugs for me. I run 1 step above stock spark plugs and gap them at .042, which is supra spec. I also run 93 octane and have my timing set at 15 degrees. all of which helps me get the 17 plus mpg's and all the power I could ask for.

Awesome. Does anyone have some pics of the final product? It seems this thread is so old that most of the pics are gone. Looks like some kept the airbox while others went for a cone filter, I'd like to see how either of them fits.
Does someone have a link to the Spectre kit people are referencing?

That's perfect. I was wondering what to do with the valve cover hose and the two off the airbox. Looks like those little breather filters did the trick.
What airbox do you have on there? It doesn't look like the stock one or the one of a Camry. Seems like the tricky part of this mod is figuring out how to match up the retangular side of the VAFM to the cone filter so if there's an air box that fits, I'm all for that.

The airbox is the 7mge stock one. I just grabbed it with the afm when I got it from the junkyard. As a bonus it uses the stock 3vze air filter. it is basically the same setup as the 3vze with 1 big difference. The 3vze filter sits on a horizontal plane and the 7mge filter sits on a vertical plane. So no cone filter for me, which is better for water protection etc....

Alright! I believe I have a failed AFM on my hands, so I figure what the hell, lets see what kind of upgrading I can do....
Well done on these installs guys. I look forward to the improvement.
Note: I highly recommend plumbing those vacuum/breather lines back into the intake as the the system is designed to be under a vacuum not atmospheric and sometimes slight pressure like our engine bays see. Then again this is coming from my experience with highly sensitive Subaru turbo engines so take it as you will.

RedeyeJedi, is that the Spectre kit?

I have run my setup for 2 years this way. So I think the valve cover filter will work just fine on this old truck motor. These old motors are designed to run on 3rd world piss fuel and keep running for a long time. Although I do really really enjoy the comparison of my 3vze with some 7mge bits on it with a highly tuned turbo motor... lol Good luck with the swap, you wont be disappointed

Also, I know you probably said it before, but is there a huge advantage with the 7mge coil?
