intermitent hesitation?

So usually in first and second either when starting off from a stand still or in gear keeping it steady at ~25mph I get what feels like a lack of fuel or hesitation, lack of power and I have to give it a little more pedal for it to right itself. Usually a fuel pump craps the bed all at once right? I'm thinking either EGR or o2 sensor? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Tune up yet???

Most likely the fuel pump would fail completly not slowly go

What about fuel filter? ide change it regardless if it never has been.

How many miles are on the motor and its the 2.4 I assume?

ya the filter isnt a highly thought about filter. people usualy leave the stock one in the entire life span of the rig and dont ever realize they could have been getting better millage and all.

Evil.Dingo 07-03-2008 01:31 PM

thanks you guys, I think I'll try that and post back!

If it helps at all. I am good friends with everybody at my local Toyota dealership, I used to be a lot porter there (aka BIOTCH).

I took my old Runner there and while they were changing the oil I asked them to change the fuel filter. My buddy laughed and said, "Dude...that's a lifetime part, that's a waste of money." So I said, "Well, let's just do it so I can have the peace of mind." He snickered and said, "Alright Money Bags."

My mileage jumped from 16.7 to 18.3 two tanks later.
I took my mileage spreadsheet to the dealership.

He now recommends doing them at around 100k.
It's amazing how easily that filter is overlooked - even by the dealerships.

Good luck,

Not saying it's the problem, but at 166,000 miles, the throttle position sensor may be starting to act up.

L44-301082-000:laugh: I bet they just didnt want to deal with doing it. its not hard but can be a small pain to do.

My freind had similar issues with lack of power and hesitation. He replaced everything but the filter. when it came time that nothing else could have been the issue in his mind he replaced it and probalby got 15hp back

Very overlooked part but has to be done at some point.

Or even the IAC

INFINITY 07-03-2008 02:11 PM

also the in-tank fuel strainer (little more in depth at getting to than the main filter but a good one to change as well)
also check the timing

Evil.Dingo 07-03-2008 02:51 PM

thanks guys, all good stuff! Where is the damn fuel filter anyway?

abecedarian 07-03-2008 02:53 PM

look above the starter and below the manifold.

toyotatom93 07-03-2008 02:56 PM

There are 2 fuel filters a pre by the tank and the other one is I believe somewhere in the passenger wheel well.

I also had a hesitation problem that was from one of my spark plug wires...Changed them out with the plugs and now it runs awesome.

Might want to check the TPS, also the fuel filter. It is a little hard to get to. Just under the intake manifold and above the oil filter.
