Intake manifold and plenum
 

Is there a bolt tightening sequence for the intake manifold, plenum and water pump for a 1990 3vze? Can't find it in the FSM...

Generally, bolt tightening sequences are used to apply uniform pressure to a gasket or seal, so that wrinkles / bends / "smooshing" don't occur. If you can't find a sequence specific to your application, a good rule of them is to tighten the furthest opposing fasteners, moving in a clockwise (or counter clockwise) direction. I.E. for a hexagon

... 5 ... 2

Thanks for the response. That's the pattern I use when tightening the lug nuts on the wheels. The reason I'm asking is it had a coolant leak between the head and the intake manifold where the gasket had failed at the rear passenger side of the engine, which would lead me to believe it wasn't torqued in the proper sequence the last time the manifold was off. Hell of a time tracking the leak down, fortunately (???!?!?!) the timing belt popped, and since I was in there anyway I got to find the exact cause of the leak. Other possibilities included water bypass pipe #1 (which got replaced anyway), water bypass hose #3 (the U shaped one), and the water bypass outlet. All that appeared good and sealed, though. Just leaking between the head and manifold. The FSM I have has a sequence for the head bolts and the valve cover but not the intake manifold or plenum. Did Toyota ever publish a sequence, or is it assumed to just use a general sequence as you suggest?

Yeah, tried all the obvious already, that's why it got posted up here. Saw that post that left the question unanswered, thanks for trying though. Bought all the gaskets from toyota, unfortunately the cardboard sandwich they shipped in did not contain pattern instructions. The google for 3vze gives a lot of mazda images, but none specific to the 3vze. Swear I saw the torque pattern somewhere, but now it's time for reassembly and I can't find it anywhere.
