I am considering installing manual locking hubs on my 91 4runner. I use the 4WD very little. Will the hubs reduce ware on the front drive train and maybe improve fuel milage?

reduce wear...yes. improved fuel mileage? some say yes, others say no. i'd do it just because you can. go with the OEM asins though, and not the warns. you should be able to find a decent used set from the junkers or from wabfab for $50-100. its a quick half hour/side swap...

I went with the SuperWinch from Summit for $90. Couldn't find any Aisin around here or Ebay. They work for what I need, free Wheeling front end. The only thing I noticed was I had to use a spacer when putting the bolt back on the CV axle. MPG gains? Haven't had them long enough to tell and I would say a minor gain would be possible if rig is tuned properly to begin with. Definately frees up front from spinning constantly preventing wear, well worth the mod to go manual with locking hubs of your choice.

Don't know if SW is a good choice or not, but for what I needed them for will be fine, a temp fix until I can remove and inspect front CV's and front drive shaft. Don't do any 4 wheeling much, but do engage every now and then to lube everything up now and again.

I checked out the Wabbit's and if $$$ wasn't tight, I would have got his. I may still later on, but his are the best I've seen and ready to go to boot. If you are going to spring for Warn, go with Aisin

Just depends on whether you have ADD or auto hubs, but still pretty much a direct swap out. Use to find a swap out article online, bunches of them and even some in the tech write-ups here on Yotatech.

I didn't see any mileage increase even though the truck feels like it is rolling easier...

As for Warn vs. Aisin ... the Warns will break easier, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. As noted above, it's about a 1/2 hr per side (actually quicker with the Warns since they don't use cone washers) to swap them, which is a whole lot quicker than a CV or ring and pinion...

Maybe its just me, but I was surprised because I saw an almost 2mpg increase. Also, the truck rolls a lot easier now. I bought the aisins from deathcougar, but i dont think he has anymore.

I still find it funny people say warns break easier. The cheap ones and the superwinch hubs break easy, the premium warn hubs havent failed me yet, nor have the failed a few friends of mine who dont drive yotas.

I have a set of Aisin for sale. 41K on the truck they were pulled from. They are complete with the toyota FSM instructions. I am also going to get all the gaskets from toyota tomorrow to sweeten the deal. $100 + shipping.

An Excellent Idea! For many reasons. I liked the fact that I could have 2wd low range. Wierd I know! I had to change the CV joints and did not want to do it again. I saw a small mileage increase, but it definately rolls better. With the wheel/tire off the ground, spin the wheel. Then lock the hub and spin it again, huge difference. Be sure to lock the hubs and drive to relube everthing (just as JEBSR5 stated earlier) every now and then.

I held out and searched ebay for the Aisin stockers. I am glad that I did. Strong, Cheap and Toyota OEM. When I got them I tore them apart and relubed and sealed everything. 3 years and not a problem.

Perhaps its just the difference in the trucks or the way you wheel vs me?

I went into some insane mud pits about 3 months ago like 2x a week (before it snowed here) and was going plenty fast and snagged a few times yet they didnt break. I dunno..
