Inner axle seal replacement
 

Hey guys I'm pretty sure my inner axle seal is blown since I'm slinging oil all over the place. All my bearings were replaced within the last few months so I'm pretty sure its not that.

My question is how big of a project is it to replace these? And can this be accomplished with your average household mechanic tools?

Make sure that whatever tool you choose to drive the seal in covers the entire outside edge of the seal, or the inside will bend in, requiring you to buy another seal (don't ask how I know).

did you do the bearings without replacing the seals?

Damn I hate to sound like a noob but is there an "inner" and "outer" axle seal? I just thought there was the outer on the Toyota axles.

no there is both.

which both should be replaced when doing the bearings...i mean....you're already in there so why not take the extra few minutes and replace the seals? they're cheap anyway lol

There's a seal that goes on the bearing case which is the outer seal, replacing it requires pressing the bearing off the axle shaft. The inner seal is the one that is on the axle housing and just requires pulling the shaft out of the housing to replace.

2x on replacing them both with the bearings, especially the outer seal since you have to have it all apart to replace it anyways.

OP was the inner damaged when the shafts were put back in? The shafts should -never- rest on the seals, unless you like gear oil everywhere and replacing seals.

Thanks Camo and Mag, I've pulled my axles a couple of times doing the regear and locker install and only thought there was one, no leaks so I'm NOT going to pull them again just to look.

Oh and Mag great advice on not letting the axles rest on the seals. Pull them all the way out when you do axle work or you'll be in there again in a short amount of time.

Ya, after just replacing my bearings and seals, I realized that I should have just done them during my locker install.
