ignition timing for 1986 22RE

hey guys i need some help. I just put a remanufactured head, new timing chain and gear, new plugs, wires, distributer cap and button on my toyota 4x4 pickup ( 22RE ). I finally got it running and drove it to work tonight for the first time. The problem ive got now is there is just no power at all. I can get it up to 55-60 mph, but it takes forever. I also noticed that once i got it into 5th gear it back fired a couple of times, so i dropped it back to 4th gear. When i done this i still noticed it back fired a couple of times. I think the loss of power and back fireing is due to the ignition timing not set right. the truck is just slugesh on take off. can anyone tell me if this is a ignition timing problem and if it is how do i fix it?

First off, pull the check engine codes just to make sure your not getting a afm/tps cel.
2ndly, check the timing with a timing light. After that, check the fsm and test the coil/ignitor and make sure everything is within spec.

--- Your's should be in picture A: you'll have to jumper that to get the timing set properly.

Timing should be 5BTDC with the connector jumpered and idle at spec- 750 rpm or so.

I was thinking that was where it was supposed to be set, ( 5* BTDC ) according to the sticker on the bottom of the hood. When you pull the distributer cap off and look at the rotor button , how close to the # 1 spark plug should it be pointing? Or should it be pointing more towards the front of the motor? This is my 1st toyota/ rebuild and I love the truck, I just want to get it running right.

It should be pointing to around 11oclock if it were a clock

i had someone tell me today that they read on the internet somewhere today that the ignition timing should be set at 15* BTDC not 5*BTDC? Wouldnt that make it run really bad?

If it was advanced alot you would hear pinging under load

If they were 'trying' to adjust the timing without using the jumper, 15BTDC may be somewhat accurate but you'll find that if you try to do so, the timing mark / light will jump around a lot.

when you say ill have to jumper the connector to set the timing right as well as the RPM's, why do you have to jumper it? what are you jumping ? what does this actually do?

I belive it stops it from advancing? i know abe will know the correct answer

also gotta make sure you idle is all fine and dandy

it properly sets the timing and idle speed... maybe?

Really, if you think about it, if you start moving the distributor around and/or start changing the idle speed, how does the computer know for sure you're doing it and not some other thing is causing the idle or timing to change?

that makes since. now what excactly am i putting a jumper wire in to do this? Once i get it set at 5* BTDC, I tighten the distributer down and remove the jumper correct? Once I check and set my distributer at #1 cylinder, will doing this process give me the power im missing?

Gave you a link to it about 13 posts above.

And I can't guarantee it will fix all the problems but having a known, reliable baseline is where you should start.
