How to prelube oil pump before starting engine?
 

Is there away to prelube the 3.0 oil pump before starting the engine? I know on my old ford I could spin the oil pump shaft with a drill.

Why not take the spark plugs out and crank it over until you have oil pressure.

not really... its driven off the crank.

I was advised to crank the motor with the coil wire off till you got oil pressure, then when it fires up your good to go.

yep, that's how I do it. Just let it spin for about 10 seconds with the coil wire unplugged.

YOu can also pump some oil to the pump from the filter side and wait a while while it seeps through the pump to the pan, I do this on new pumps so they seal up and pull the oil from the pan and especialy ones with aluminum housings as not to gull the sides up.

For priming my 22Rs I always packed the oil pump gears with assembly lube (typically lubriplate), and just unplugged the coil wire until oil pressure started to register plugged it back in, and fired it up.

it's better to do it without the plugs in the engine, because there's no pressure built in the cylinders that way, and thus much less load on the bearings.

i think the head is more critical to be doused in oil before starting up, as it takes much longer for oil to reach it.

I've always heard to pack the oil pump gears with vaseline when you put it together. That way the pump creates good suction and the vaseline melts as the engine heats up and dissapates into the oil.

You're gonna change the first batch of oil soon anyway right?

i don't like the idea of vaseline in my oil

vaseline is just regular white petroleum, it mixes into the oil just fine. not really any different that using white lithium assembly lube.

if you build an engine right, you change the oil after you warm it up and break in the cam, anyway.

pull the spark plugs and the efi fuse and turn the motor over tell it builds oil pressure. that should be more than good.

vasoline is what ive always used.... on my oil pump that is.. and no thats not what i call it..

Actually I do have a lot of vaseline... When I was at your house I took the "toys" out of the bucket of vaseline you had and took it to use when I did my timing cover...

Of course now that I'm done with my TC you can have it back. I've noticed you have been walking a little funny lately... Sorry... :spank:
