How do I get the PCV valve out
I have a 22re and believe my pcv valve is bad, picked one up and I can't get the old one out. What gives? Can anyone please give me a suggestion.

Pull harder with pliers. The seal looses its softness over the years and becomes hard plastic. On my 3.0 I had to put a bit of force in order to get the old one out, and that was with the valve cover off, on the floor, me stepping on it.

Yup keep pulling, I had the same problem, pesky little thing just didnt wanna leave!

First, have a new PCV grommet handy, because you'll need it. The rubber hardens, which is part of the reason you're having so much trouble, and it'll very likely break in the process of removing it.
It's just a matter of leverage, really..I clamped vicegrips on the body of the valve and used a screwdriver handle laid across the valve cover, underneath the vicegrips, to act as a fulcrum...then I just pounded on the 'grips and the valve popped out. |
Like everyone here said, its just a mater of getting the correct leverage. The old grommet is dry and hard, and may even crumble when you finally pull the PCV out.
What I did to remove mine because it also seemed stuck, is that I got a small piece of wood and laid it down next to the PCV, then with some of the angled needle nose pliers leaning over the wood, I gripped the PCV, pushed down, and the PCV flew out. Some of the grommet fell inside, so I had to get all those pieces out too. |
take the valve cover off and spray it down with lighter fluid. set the grommet alight and extinguish after 30 seconds or something. You could also use a torch. This won't burn the grommet, it will just soften it up so you can pull it out. you'll (obviously) need a new grommet.

Pull on it, grab it with pliers
Get a new grommet in there too |
I went through this a year ago. I broke the grommet taking it out. It's a few bucks at the dealership for a new one.

A flat screwdriver and a pair of pliers did it for me, the bitch was stubborn though, you gotta give it some elbow grease if it is really old.
I then carefully picked the pieces of the old hard broken grommet out of the hole, if any fell in I would have pulled the valve cover. New PCV valve and grommet went in very easy. $7 total for both at a local Autozone. |

I just replaced my PCV valve. I believe it was the original from 1994. It had a silver finish over the grommet. I tried to pull the valve out with channel locks and snapped it in half. Had to use a flat head screwdriver to destroy the grommet which then fell into the hole. Luckily, I was able to get it all out of there and replaced with new OEM valve and grommet.
