Question How can I make my truck worthy of some serious trails?

I see some of the pictures on this site and can't imagine my truck being able to do that. The engine is in great shape and I don't have any problems with anything really, but even something as simple as rolling over a curb seems like it takes more effort than it should. What's the deal? What can I do? Does everything have to be done in 4-Low?

take a look around on here for members from near where you are, i think there is a section for upcoming trail runs or something like that. those first tentative outings will have your heart beating a mile a minute! once bitten, youll never be the same.

getting some seat time and asking questions is probably the best thing to do first. you would be surprised at how capable your rig is right out of the box. i wheeled mine with 235's the first summer, not knowing much about wheeling and all the options available to me.

other than a set of dayton mt's, my truck is pretty much stock. ive done some pretty serious off roading the past couple of years. some of the folks ive wheeled with have been shocked with what i can do in stock trim.

there are very helpful and knowledgable folks on here, what you cannot find using the search button, they should be able to help with. learn what your rig can do and how you can improve your skills before you go whole hog on the mods. have fun, be safe and get a part time job!

Well, suspension is usually the first to come for becoming more trail-worthy. Coupled with large tires that have an aggressive tread design, you can take many trails with just stock 4WD.

Lockers are usually the next step, and greatly enhance your vehicles offroad abilty.

Remember also, driving is 80% driver, 20% truck.

I disagree about the suspension. Stock is just fine - fit the largest tires you can. If you're posting in this forum, you can probably fit 33x10.50 with no lift.

Nothing else will increase the capability of the truck as much as lockers, except ...

I was thinking more 90%/10% at this level of 'wheeling... balances out more the harder the trails.

I'll have to really test the 4-low. Lockers came stock. Guess I just don't have the skills yet.

I'd agree with the 90/10 driver/truck statement. My uncle has been able to scurry up stuff with his open diffed Taco on 31s that I've had trouble with in my rear-locked 4Runner on 32's. I credit that to his skill.

Yeah, 4LO will make a huge difference ...

No toyotas came stock with lockers before 95.5... Lockers are locking differentials (not hubs) see the sticky thread at the top of the Offroad Tech section...

I TRULY belive in what tc says, on 33s and a locked rear you can go alot of places. And driver skill is a must, Clay a member on this board. vann7559 or something, is stock except bumpers and 31 muds, and he does 7 outta 10 rated trails.

I have taken my bone stock 85 wheeling a few times since I bought it and have yet to get stuck or destroy anything.

My only planned upgrades OME suspension, ARB bumper and trutrack in the rear. You don't need to look at pictures and say you have to have such and such part to have a good time wheeling. Pick a good line on the trail and know your trucks limits and your own. Upgrade as necessary

IMO The way I look at it is it takes more skill to wheel a nearly stock truck then some drive over everything beast.

the hardest part is breaking out your wallet....

check out www.toyotatrailriders.com a local dfw yota club.

i did my e-lock swap in an evening. bigger tires make curbs smaller.

its totally driver. i think everyone is in aggrement with that. i go out with my dead stock 94' on ht tires and this thing is 2wd. i can wheel with my bud whos got a 97'wrangler on a 4 in black dimond lift with 32 pro comp mt. and of course hes got 4wd. its all about havin fun. if ur out wheelin to show off or own other people, ur not wheelin right. btw, i got 215/70r14's and i cant fit too much bigger, and i post in this forum. ^_^ my advice, drive. lots. add some hp and other stuff so u can get to the fun stuff, but have fun whereever u are. and curbs isnt wheelin, its regular drivin. -_^
