I want a snorkel but $200 is a little stiff to have it look pretty so fabrication it is. I was thinking about cutting a hole in the hood (I have a few spares) and running it up and back on the hood. PVC pipe should do the trick. I can make a forward facing "scoop" for dding and mabye get some better milage. Any homemade snorkels out there?

i just finished making my air box.. pvc gluded a 90 bend and another bend so its ppointed to go out the fender or maybe hood im going to do the rest later this week when i bring a drill home for the hole saw or use a plasma cutter just a few more bends and straight peices.. i got all the pre bend and stuff from home depot .. i used the cheap tubing but its only trail rig and if i have to make a new one every year then so be it..ill take pics when its done

Big T: I look forward to your progress as I have a DEEP water crossing to tackle second weekend in july, have to get some supplies to a friend hunt camp near Cartier, and there is a river/creek to cross.

Im thinking the hood would be a pain since it may hinder the open/closing of the hood. I cannot see a benefit to runnning it through the hood as it all hooks up at the same place.
Depending on the overall use of your vehicle I would go for the pre-made snorkels (but thats just me). Now another option is to run the intake into your cab as some have.
The concept of ram air (which doesnt exist with these engines) and water crossings do not mix

Please! whatever you do.....make it a clean job....I see some really crappy home fab snorkels.....


If I HAD to make one I would buy the ARB capper (JUST the top part with the mesh, not the whole snorkel) and attach to your tube....

Godzilla, come on, I thought from our prior converation you would think better of me. I was thinking short ram air scoop for dding and an attachable snorkle extension for wheelin.
Opening the hood would not be a problem as I would cut the lower reciever piece flush and the top can be a slide fit. I KNOW a slide fit will not seal perfectly but I dont plan on driving multiple km's under water A LA Danta's peak with peirce brosnen LOL. It is more about preventing spash behind headlight.
RAM AIR is just a funnel used to create a SLIGHT positive pressure in the intake. The vaccum demands of the engine at high rpm's superceed that preassure, but most of the power gain is masked, usually it's colder intake temp not pressure.

Hey man, sometimes good people have bad ideas. haha. Honestly I think if you saved up some acid rainy day money (sudbury..haha) you would be happy at the end of the day with a nice (arb/safari) snorkel.
Just think of how much water splashes on your hood when you hit a good puddle. or how it moves around on the hood just when raining. If anything I would direct the intake from behind the headlight to maybe into the fender or at least curved away. As for ram air, it is my understanding that the way in which the fuel and air mixes in these engines, no ram effect will occur, or at least be useful.

Does that mean you need to open the window so you can get better air flow to the engine, to allow you to accelerate? Or do you just turn on the heater fan to creat a high pressure "forced air" induction?

actually you put the intake directly in front of the vent and put the a/c on so you get a cold air ram intake system.

I know what you mean bigt. I really don't want to look like one of those guys in a landrover lr3 with a spotless arb snorkle. I hate those guys because I would use the damn thing, and they use it as a status symbol.

Yeah I've been thinking about making a snorkel for my 22r. Routing and side tube aint make me loose no sweat, just trying to figure out how connect it to my carb, and what kind of air filter to use is what gots me hung up...

Could use an inline air filter like alot of newer V8 fords use Swamp. They fit inside the actual air intake.

I made a snorkel, it turned out very good besides being a to forward on my fender. I used some of those 2" to 3" rubber adapters, 2" ABS for the inner fender and 3" ABS for the outside snorkel, some 90, 60 and 45 degree elbows and another rubber adapter and a safari snorkel head. I secured it to the front windshield area using some self tapping hex head screws and a piece of sheetmetal I bent.

It works great, sounds good and looks ok. I very rarely get any water in there and if I do its little drops, nothing special. A little bit of water will not hurt anything and the filter will stop almost all but alot of water. I had a bad expierance with my stock intake at Paragon years ago, I sucked in quite a bit though a poorly sealed deckplate and thankgod very little actually made it into the intake, I cleaned it out with alot of rags and no issues.
