HG and TIming Chain replace thread
Yes I know there are more of these threads than "what size tires can I run" but hey what the heck...
Last summer a few weeks before I deployed to Afghanistan my HG blew. So I "winterized" the rig and parked it. Well I am home now and tore into the engine today. 3 hours later the head was off, better than a 8 hours it took on my 95 4runner. Well most certainly the HG was blown as you can see in the photo. Didnt look to hard, but I think the crosshatching looks good, so no issues with just a timing chain, HG, injector cleaning and bolt her back up and fire her up.. then time to sell her. I am going to drop the head off at a shop on friday to make sure its flush. I have a two week trip to Texas starting next week so I will pick the head up when I get back. I am also going to take the injectors in for a sonic cleaning while they are out, or at least close to out. Except I wasnt burning any coolant, at least none noticible. As you can see where the blown section is the water jacket isnt near there, just between cyls. I did do a seafoam about 1K before it blew, I wonder if it just worked better on #4.
Any thoughts on the best way to de carbon 1-3? |
I used some Valvoline Throttle Body cleaner one time and it will cut through ANYTHING! Available at NAPA..
It will completely erase any oil from the cylinder walls & rings, though. You will probably want to change your oil afteward and re-oil the cylinder walls (STP works great)... http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ...asp?product=52 |
Carbon
ATF will clean the carbon out real well. Dump about 1/4 -1/2 a quart of ATF in the brake booster or other fairly large vacuum line. It will blow white smoke like a SOB for a while, but it really does get rid of that carbon. Ive seen engines torn apart shortly after an ATF treatment like that, and they look like they just got back from the machine shop.

Brake Cleaner and the 3M pads that can be chucked into a cordless always worked REALLY well.

is it me or is there a GAPING hole in your block between #3 and #4??
If that is the case im surprised 3 and 4 had ANY kind of compression... |

If that is the case im surprised 3 and 4 had ANY kind of compression... UPDATE: Got the head stripped of the intake manifold and it goes to the head shop tomorrow, the injectors go in tomorrow too. Only need to replace one stud in the head and that was a :bang: on my part. I couldnt figure why the intake manifold wouldnt come off in one spot, all the bolts were out.. or so I thought. But I thought the stud may have been frozen in the manifold so I removed it.. nothing.. then I noticed the allen head screw going thru the thermostat housing :pop: .... |
