Help with timing!!!!!

okay so I just put a new dizzy on and I’m currently doing timing. I marked everything and i put the new one in the exact spot. The thing is I can only advance timing to about 8 degrees then I run out of adjustment. I’m guessing the rotar gear needs to be one tooth back or forward. Clockwise or counter? I made sure crank was at tdc beforehand and on the number 1 cylinder. Please help.

What vehicle are you working on?

Engine?

93 3.0. Okay I pulled dizzy back out and rotated it 1 tooth counter clockwise. Now I can only go down to 15 degrees advanced. I have a feeling something is out of whack here and it involves work. Haha

for the time being of I have to drive it. Would it be better at 15 degrees or 7-8 degrees? But I do want to fix this. I would like to be able to set it at 10.

Put it back on what should be the right tooth. As far as I can get it is 5 degrees advanced. I’ll take it for now. The new dizzy corrected my warm start issue but I want to figure this out. I want that extra 5 degrees. I have exhaust, headers, intake mod and adjusted my valves at one point. I def want that advancement. Does this mean my cams gears aren’t aligned with my crank pulley? I dont Remember this issue when I put my original dizzy on after I did all that work years ago.

UPDATE: I just took it up my driveway from behind my house and it doesn’t seem like it’s firing on all cylinders.

could my dizzy be 360 out. I never did look at the hash marks on the gears of the dizzy to see if they aligned with the block marks. Cold the gear marks be 180 out and th rotor still point at 1 cylinder?

I doubt it... probably wouldn't start to 180 out...
you have all the plug wires in the right spot?

Oops... lol I guess you checked to make sure you didn't get any wires crossed...

360 out? that would be set correctly.

You went from "can only get 8° advance" to "can not get less than 15°" now it only goes to five.

I'd be checking my jumper and timing light are working as intended.

DONT BUY JUNK REPLACEMENT !!
so after fiddling with it for over an hour. I put both side by side. As you can see the new replacements rotor is not in the exact position that the original Denso is. Camera angle might fool it a little but trust me it’s not. So I said HUH??? That might be the play that I needed for timing. So I cleaned up the old dizzy and put it in. Sure as ˟˟˟˟ I have the full range of motion in timing off the crank pulley. Timed it at 10 degrees. Called parts store and it was a lengthy discussion as to why I AM returning this product. Then they go to say that the dizzy production was changed in the 7th month of 93!?!? I’ve never heard of this, has anybody else!?!? Turns out perfect because come to find out a new dizzy didn’t solve my original problem haha

You tested the pickup coil, that sends timing data to the ECU, and it fails when warm. Are you saying now it consistently passes? Was that user error like your probe leads were falling off (use the clip on type BTW it helps) the meter wasn't set to the right scal, or it "magically" fixed itself (intermittent shorts and opens don't fix themselves, IE still broken and needs replacing it's just not currently in its bad condition)..

I found some five year old posts and thought I'd read you have multiple Toyota's.. Did I read that wrong, are we working on several vehicles here or are you just splitting off sub-topics into different threads. It's best to keep to a single thread untill a problem is fully solved, it keeps all the details in one place which makes it easy for others to follow. Keep in mind this, while you maybe talking to a handful of people about your Toyota that handful of people might be talking to a handful of people about a handful of Toyota.
