Help! no power to fuel pump!
 

Hey Fellas! My 89 22re 4runner died the other day, after some investigating, I realized that there is no power to the fuel pump! I assume it would be the relay.
Where is the relay?? the manual mentions nothing of a relay!


So for the time being, I hot wired the fuel pump to the battery with a toggle switch on the dash....because I need the truck!

What else could it be other than the relay? I hear the EFI solenoid clicking on and off with the key.

Someone on here who is more awake than I am will send you the URL. I had it saved before I had to reformat my hard drive. Basically, as I understand it (which may not be well... many here are more experienced than I), as you crank over your engine, the AFM/MAF whichever it is (air flow sensor over your air filter) triggers the relay to turn on the fuel pump when their is air flow. Some wise man whose URL I can't remember found that you can jump two contacts in your diagnostic plug to bypass this. He has an excellent write up about it and details the whole system. My personal plan is to put a switch in under the dash and bypass the stock system entirely, adding my own relay, switch and wiring. This will act as a bit of theft prevention as well. Thieves will only get a few hundred yards before they run out of gas. As far as the relay goes... I really should remember this but I don't. Sorry. I'm blaming my newborn daughter for my lack of memory/sleep. She will hETAave to live with the guilt for the rest of her life.

its behind the passenger side speaker (not on the door) the one on the dash, and its a peice to get out!

Glovebox removal seems like it would help a lot. ymmv

try jumping the terminals under the hood to send power direct to the fuel pump.

i like the switch for the fuel pump. its kinda like a anti theft device lol. Its wat I did with mine. Good luck

Ya I got a switch rigged up now until I resolve the problem. Behind the passenger side speaker eh?......sounds fun to accses haha

I am getting a bit sick of fuel issues, I have answered this same question several times now. The toyota fuel system operates from the Circuit opening relay (COR) which for the record is under the dash on the firewall. The COR is a duel coil relay with two separate triggers and one power supply from the EFI fuse. The first is from the ignition switch...When turned to start one coil is activated running the pump, when the key is returned from start the pump will stop. The second is from the Air flow meter (AFM). When the engine is running (sucking air) the AFM sends a signal to the COR running the second coil and running the pump.

If the AFM is failing the COR may not receive a signal to stay on...or the COR could have an issue itself. Fortunately there is an easy way to test it. By Jumping the Fp and B+ terminals in your diagnostics box you bypass the COR and AFM and send 12V directly to the pump VIA the EFI FUSE. If your pump doesn't run after this test then it is either your wiring after the COR or the pump itself.

Go under the hood and flip open the diagnosis terminal, get a paperclip, safety pin, etc. and jump contact B+ and Fp, this should let you know if you are getting power to the fuel pump, just listen for a buzzing sound.
