Has anyone done a 4.0 w/ auto trans conversion?
I've now been to Toyota twice and driven the new Taco and 4Runner w/ the auto trans.
Gotta say, Toyota knocked it out of the park with this one.
It doesn't try to outsmart me, just does what I want. Which in my book makes it smarter than all the jeeps, chevys, fords, dodges and OTHER toyotas I've driven.
So, I'm thinking I want the 4.0 & auto trans for my '94.
Anyone tried this yet?

Without much knowledge into this subject, I am gonna say that while it might not be impossible, it would be very hard as (I BELIEVE) this tranny needs a lot of input from newer technology your truck might lack to work and behave like it should.
But, I might be wrong. As a first step tho, I suggest you look into what this tranny needs to operate. http://techinfo.toyota.com. Download some tranny sections from FSM's on newer 4Runners and Tacomas.
Good luck!!

If you want to do this, and get it to work properly, it'd probably save you a lot of trouble if you swapped wiring harnesses with the motor and tranny. I'm positive the tranny is tired into the ECU, and seeing that you're skipping a whole motor generation, I doubt that your wiring is going to be fully compatable.
If I were doing it, I'd rip everything out and start everything from scratch.

I agree with Bill, your gonna need the wiring harness out of that new yota and the engine, ecu and trans.
Honestly for the amount of power it puts out a chevy smallbock would be a better choice and easier to do. Plus it would put out more power.

Monster - a guy here did the exact swap with the 1GRFE (iirc) which is the 4.0L v6. IIRC he is on the other coast from me and it took him the better part of 6 months to pull it off...
BTW - you didnt like the 6sp manual behind the 4.0?

I have everythingthing needed for the swap including 6 speed -- it's a 2005 drivetrain with an 85 body mounted on it -- i'm debating rather or not to finish -- i'm thinking about selling or parting out? It only has 125 miles on it! The wiring seems to complicated for me to figure out? Maybe if i get some other projects out of the way i could concentrate on this one !

I'm thinking the best way to do this would be to section the frame. Take the whole front suspension with engine attached and stick it into my '94.
It sure would alliviate about half the headaches, maybe more.
I want the electronic climate control too, so I guess I'm a hunting for a '05-'06 Limited 4Runner.
Then use ALL the gauges, AC system, steering column, brakes, pedels and everything cool from a limited runner's interior. Make a custom 4link airbag rear suspension and use the Rend too. Or maybe just adapt the 4runner's rear suspenion to the truck and use airbags for height control.
I know, it's a little wider, but that's not a bad thing. Positive offset wheels and the bushwacker cutout flairs ought to solve that.
I think I've just defined my project. This is what I'm doing.
I wonder if the factory warranty from the runner would still be valid...
Bumpin, I never even drove the 6spd, I knew I was tired of shifting and didn't even consider it.
