Growing Power Stearing Leak
 

So I noticed a tough turn in my 95 4runners steering wheel, accompanied by a horrible moaning noise that would cause passersby to stare. I checked the fluid level which I hadn't checked in nearly the entire year Ive had the truck, I know lazy of me. It was bone dry, so i put a half quart of fluid in it while the motors running and the moan that usually got louder when I rose my rpm levels from idle or when I turn the wheel immediately go away. Everything was fine for about a month and then it came back so I check it and its empty again. I fill it and start to check it twice a week I see where its leaking uderneath but now the leak is apareantly growing cuz the yota's guzzling fluid. I checked around and I hear Jacob's stop leak supposedly is a cult favorite not to mention guaranteed. Im going to clean the undercarriage tomorow and measure the amount put it and we'll give it a try it might just help some others out so stay posted if you've got the same problem. If you know of another fix please comment.

I tried the stop leak, worked for a while. Mine is about as bad as your sayin', so I keep a bottle o' fluid in the truck. Untill I get to fixin' it, I'll probably attempt a rebuild (new seals).

u are using ATF right?

per toyota FSM: DEXRON II only for PS box

anything else will create leaks

I just did mine about 3 weeks ago.
I got the kit from oreilly auto.
Part# PPS 8641 which doesn't show up on their website but they got it from thier main branch here. $11.19
A google search on the part number landed me at Rock auto.

It's not too bad to do but it was worth it cause it's not leaking anymore. Mine seemed to be leaking mostly from the rear o-ring which was flat as hell.
Good luck and don't drop any of the blades on the floor, they only go in one right way.

stop leaky , no worky worky, it looks like the leak is coming from the front of the pump?

my pump leaks aslo....kinda sounds like a small supercharger when its gettin low....or empty for that matter

I have a write up for rebuilding the power steering pump for the 3.0. I can't remember where I got it, but it seems like it is put together well. I will be rebuilding mine in the next month or so.

Odd as it may sound, check for any missing bolts on the pump...the ones that hold the unit together. I had a leak for months. Thought it was a hose or maybe a seal. I wasn't willing to rebuild the pump, so I tightened the hose and thought that might do it. Nope. After blowing it off for those few months, I broke down and decided to really investigate. Turns out, for whatever reason, one of the bolts had come out. Put another one in...problem solved.

^^lol mine was missing a bolt too when I recently looked at it.

I have the same problem my steering will make kind of a whining moaning sound when i turn the wheel while stopped or going slow. I can also kind of feel it through the steering wheel, (little vibration or rubbing) The power steering has been pretty low a couple times I have checked it and I have refilled it but it still makes the sounds. whats the best way to fix this problem?????

If the reservoir is full, your belt may be loose. If that's fine, it may be air in the system. When was the last time you had the system flushed?

Well I have only been driving this 4Runner for about the last 5,000 miles. I just bought it in July, and since then I have not flushed the power steering. Where do I look to find if the belt is loose???

oh and dont be me and assume that power steering fluid is what goes in the resevoir only refill it with atf or your leak will grow greatly, stupid me.

I got the atf dextron 3, I got the new pump, I got the pulley puller and the pulley installer from Advance auto, very nice they give you complete kits to do the job. Now Im gonna take pics and get in here and see if this dummy can do it, using common primate sense and the link gsgalant gave me. Its actually for a rebuild but the reman. pump was only $40 and that didnt have the seals so what the hell. Hopefully after tomorow I'll actually be a real contributor to this site.

i got the pump out here for $80 and that was cheap!! damn.

i just installed my reman pump and there is still a leak?
it is dripping off of the bottom of the pump housing.

it was a reman it was 40 after I returned the core, I couldnt even get the first bolt of to losen the drive belt, I got my truck out of upstate new york and from the years of corrosion it was basically jb welded on there, my mechanic charged me 100 to do the job so I said what the hell. Turns out even with a fulll shop it took him over an hour to get that bolt out, he said Id have stripped it or tored the head of no doubt, with a crescent wrench.

I just rebuilt my pump. It wasn't that bolt that caused me any trouble, it was the nut that holds the pulley to the shaft. Like your sayin', virtually welded on from years of rust. I had to cut the nut off with a chisel, to get the pulley off. The rebuild isn't the easiest thing to mess with (without alot of patience), but it cost me way less than $140. I'm a glutton for punishment though.

It's DEXRON II ATF, not III. But it might not matter.
