Good price for used tranny r & r?
Hey all, first gear has finally went in my 89 pu w the 3.0L R150 5spd. After doing some shopping around I found a wrecker who has a few of them and claims they shop & road test them before selling them, and can install it as well for me. They say they will warrantee it for 3 months as well after install.
They want $450 (cad$) for the tranny and transfer case, and $650 for the install. He also said they pulled a clutch and pressure plate in great condition, and would throw that in for free. I offered him $1000 cash and he said he'd get back to me. This seems pretty reasonable to me, but just figured I'd run it by you guys to see what you thought.
I had found a couple of used ones on Craigslist, but they both wanted $200 and were out of non running parts trucks they *claimed* ran fine, but I'd still have to pay to get shipped for a sight unseen trans w no warrantee.
Also, is there any market to sell my old tranny + tcase for cheap to get rebuilt u guys think? I asked the wrecker about it and he said they weren't interested, but don't really want to just give it to them in case I could help someone else out and help offset some of the costs.

I just replaced mine, also a v6 5speed. I bought a used replacement from yodajims.com for $150, and that's that. They do test the used tranny's, and for $150 I got a good box that upshifts and downshifts smoothly into all gears. Did the labor myself, not difficult at all, especially if you have a tranny jack and an extra pair of hands... i had neither.

It's a different trans that they claimed they shop and road test before installing, and they will do the work for free fixing and replacing if it's faulty.

I'm kinda leery about doing the job myself... Never done a tranny before and although I'm pretty confident I COULD get it done, I think id rather do it w someone w experience for my first time. I will check out yodajims though. How much was shipping for that tranny you ordered?

If they'll do it for a g, that's only 550, which at 75 an hour, is only just over 7 hours, which I think seems reasonable (correct me if I'm wrong, never done a tranny be4), especially if they'll do the clutch and flywheel too!

If I was ballin, this would def be the route I would take. But at 1400 + tax + install, it's just not an option for me right now. I will prob order their rebuild kit though if I decide to go that route. Thanx TN
