someone mentioned something about roadside assist. It is a great idea an extra 5 bucks a month can save you hundreds in towing bills. I added it to my insurance policy before I left and it saved my ass. I was 30 miles outside flagstaff and my exhaust pipe broke off the manifold.
It's funny you posted this because I went back and found my thread because tomorrow I'm leaving again to move back to Nor Cal.
Water water water and then some. Oil, coolant, tools, high energy foods(including my brake down time in flagstaff I was up for over 36 hours). A cooler for cold drinks, then always have that extra 5 gallons in a jug or something. I brought along 5 gallons of gas also. Remember energy drinks and coffee dehydrate you, so with every coffee and rockstar, drink some water.
A working cell phone. I brought all my trail gear to. High lift, tools, spare parts and electrical items. A hand gun. I moved and am moving once again with everything I own in this world, so defensive items were on the list(hand gun, mace, knife).
take out a hundred or so in cash. Some places don't take cards out in the sticks.

Like wyoming said, time it so you'll drive through the worst hot parts at night.

I did 900 miles 2 winters ago carrying about 900 lbs. The trip took 17 hours and snowed all but 2 hours. I was barely ever over 45 mph. Never worried about overheating though.

I'm in no hurry, faster I get back, faster I am back to reality, job, house. I'm splitting up with my wife, just leaving her and everything except my guns and dog and going back home. I figure I'll have MAYBE $2000 in the bank and am just gonna go. I wanted to wait till September, but job is bad, wife is worse, so it's getting close to time to go!

I'd just make sure your cooling system is up to par and just pay attention to the temp gauge and don't be afraid to stop and let it cool down if need be. I've driven my 90 back and forth to the east coast 4 or 5 times in the past 3 years and it's held up fine.
Does it have any issues now like oil use or anything like that? If you haven't already I'd change the diffs and tranny fluid before the ride or at least make sure everything is full and in good condition.

So, the transfer case leaks? Theoretically, you shouldn't have to worry about that as long you don't use the 4WD since the tranny and transfer case don't share fluid.
yeah its gotten worse since the last time i looked!

I got the same leak and I asked a mechanic friend about it. He said theres sometimes a bushing of some sort in there and that could cause the seal to leak if the bushing is worn. I haven't torn into mine yet, so I'm not sure

should post up all the citys your gonna be going thru. im sure all the yotatech members can help you out along the way. i know i would but im just one state past where your going. i agree on having roadside assist. fluids for the yota and yourself.

The only way to be prepared for everything is to tow another vehicle behind you.
Check the radiator, brake fluid, etc. Change the oil and filter, maybe spark plugs, wires, etc. Set the timing. Carry metric wrenches and sockets... maybe have a quart of GL4 and GL5 gear oil, some pre-mixed coolant and some engine oil too.
My '88 just went from Temecula area of California to Portland, Oregon... drove about 2000 miles there, and is now on its way back to Cali. It has 280K+ miles on it. This is the second trip in a year it has done so. Prior to that, it went from Cali to Walla Walla, Washington and back twice, to Texas and back to Cali once, and to San Francisco 3-4 times. I should probably change the oil now, right?
Just kidding: it's been changed 4 times.
I guess what I'm getting at is that if it's going to break, it will break no matter what preparations are made. Have money in the pocket for a tow truck and money available to fix what wasn't supposed to break but did.

Getting Divorced sucks and is expensive no matter how it works out.
good idea to post your route i am way to far east but i am sure you should have help at the most a a hour or two way.
Look at the bright side you have a good friend who loves you going along no matter how bad you screw up or how late you come home.

Funny how almost one year to the day I come back to this thread, again asking the same thing. no divorce though just offered a new position in Stewartville MN. So I will leave Saturday afternoon in hopes of being back to MN by Monday. Water, Oil,coolant some metric wrenches and an impact. Cooler for the cab and debating on bringing the pup with me now or wait till late august. I think I will need a companion so she probably will go. Most Importantly I am bringing a Positive outlook! This is a big move for me and I'm going to do my best to make it work! Forgetting anything?
