Alright guys... so now i have kinda familiarized myself with everything going on here is my question... I had a sas done and a 6 inch lift put on to fit 35" tires (didnt wanna do any body modification so just lifted it) and i had the gearing put to 5.29 for the bigger tires.. and now the problem.. i ran out of money so couldnt purchase bigger tires so still have 31's on the rig.. can i drive it with 31's and 5.29 gearing? browsed forums and didnt find anything for this specific situation.

 

Yes you can, but your RPMs will be pretty high on the interstate... snappy around town though..

 

yes but it will be very low geared. proly be hard to break 55 with out hitting revlimmiter haha. You dont set the gearing, you have to change the ring and pinion in both front ad rear diffs. a large and tedious project. Not sure if you already knew that already. all your gears are just going to be short. probly be able to start going from a stop in 2nd.

 

Yeah i had a shop do all the diff work cause i dont really know how.. so basically it would be safer to stay off highwys til i can afford the bigger tires?

 

Ide say that would be the safe choice, plus if it is a large lift it's going to be pretty tipsy on those small tires

 

Take your drive train specs and put them into one of the many web calculators. Like this one. The transmission code is on the door placard, assuming it hasn't been replaced with something else. It's the 2nd part of the ATM section.

A little poking around hints at an r150 series..

For example an R150 and 5.29 gears puts you at about 3600 rpm (fifth gear) or 4300 (fourth) for 75 mph on the 31"s. Or on 33"s 3400 and 4000.

And for comparison, My little 4 banger with w55 and 3.42 on 25.85" about 2800 and 3300 for 75.

Your city highway limit(55) is comparable to my interstate(75), it'll be nice and torquey too.

for what it is worth using the 96 4runner owners manual(102 mph max in 4th) and that calculator, my 4th gear redline is between 3800 and 4000.

Like it's gonna get better once he raises the CG another two(plus) inches

 

I'm betting he's considering the fact that the 35s will be wider than the 31s.

Even still, I agree with ya. 4" lift + 35" tires is pretty tall.

 

With 31s wich are a lot skinnier. And lighter. It will be more tippy than with 35s. Also when he runs 35s he will need spacers or a rim with a larger back space thus making it wider. I have a SAS 5 inch lift. When I go to inspection with my 31 street tires it is much more squirly and unsafe. When my 36s are on its much wider with no wheelspacers. And the added weight of the tire adds stability

 

You might be able to find a couple stock 4:10 geared diffs cheap or even free to put in until you get money for some tires.

I got at least one, maybe more sitting in my shed I would let you have. I'm in Tucson though.
