Gas smell after start and rough idle

This is the first time posting to this site but gotten alot of information off this site. I have a 1995 toyota 4runner two wheel drive with a/t v6. My runner was idling rough and didnt have alot of power and would skip while running at 1500rmps. I changed the fuel filter and the spark plugs. Has more power but still skips but not as much. If I turn the runner off and let it sit for a little bit you go to crank the runner and if you have the vent open to the outside you get a stong gas smell inside. Most of the time when you get the gas smell it will not idle and cuts off. After it warms up the smell goes away and the runner runs fine. If Ive over looked a thread that someone has the same issue please let me know, if not does anyone have any information on what to look at. Any help would be great. Thanks for everything

Sounds like you have a dead miss. You may want to pull your codes and see what comes up. Since its a 3.0, you may also want to check the compression in your cylinders to see if they have enough pressure to run. I believe the range should be something like 140-170 lbs per cylinder. I'm sure someone will correct me, but it will be in the ballpark. Since the 3.0 has known head gasket and burnt valve issues, I would do the compression test first. That way, if the pressure is good, its alot easier to work backwards to find the cause of your miss.
